Hi everyone!

I have a 2 year old hen. She began limping on Sunday, so today is day 5. It actually seems to be getting worse because now she is not putting her foot on the ground unless she absolutely has to. Today I noticed she isn’t curling her toes when I put pressure on the pad of her foot like she does with her “good” leg.

We have confirmed it is not Bumblefoot.
She has been isolated for 4 days to keep her from walking on it too much.
I thought maybe she jumped off the roost wrong and pulled a muscle, so I Gave her aspirin and no change.

She is still laying, drinking, and eating normally and wants to get out of the “hospital.” All good signs. It is NOT Bumblefoot. Doesn’t appear to be a pulled muscle. Aspirin didn’t do anything for her. Getting worse.

What could this be? Any other treatment ideas or tests to do to narrow this down?

Hello, it could have been a pulled muscle like you thought, which normally takes around three weeks to fully heal. Has she lost any weight? Other than that, i really am not sure. Check if it is swollen, stiff, limp, anything like that might give us an idea.

Have you added any new birds to your flock recently? If she has injured her sciatic nerve in her leg, she might need more time to recover. Mareks disease and nerve injuries can look similar. Is she able to get to food and water? A chicken sling sometimes is helpful to get them upright, keep cleaner, and help to eat and drink. Super B complex vitamins daily could also help. Some chickens fight them, but many tolerate them for periods throughout the day, and lie down at night to sleep. Here are some examples, especially post 5, 11, and 12:

No swelling, and seems to be a little limp maybe? her leg just hangs there when I pick her up. She doesn’t try to get her footing like normal. And when I put pressure on her pad, there was zero reaction to try to curl her toes or move her leg. her foot just stayed in the flat footed position like it would be if she were walking on it.

no new birds, and she’s still getting to food and water. Where she is separated, it is all fairly close together. So she isn’t walking around too much to get to anything she might need. Thanks for linking the thread!
