My gold Wyandotte, Hen’Solo, suddenly started limping this morning. I can’t find any signs of trauma to her foot or leg. There doesn’t seem to be any swelling? Or a Bumblefoot looking problem? I cleaned her chicken feets and sprayed a little anti microbial and I am keeping her in the run (they usually free range in the yard). What can I check for? Watch for? Do to help her?

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Nope. she’s my chonkiest Wyandotte-23 weeks old tomorrow at 5lbs 12.9oz.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Limping, not weight baring. Prefers to lay away from it so I am maybe it hurts.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? Noticed an hour ago, about an hour after I let them out in The yard. Did not notice any problem when I opened their run.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Unknown.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. I haven’t seen her eating yet (totally normal) she was interested in a handful of grubs and limped across yard but then didn’t want to eat them.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Cleaned and used Vetericyn antimocrobial spray. Isolated to run and watching behaviors.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I would prefer to treat at home but need to know how and if it comes to it, Vet is open tomorrow. Of course not today.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use Hemp in coop. Soft dirt in run. Yard is packed dirt.

Sometimes the sciatic nerve can become inflamed and cause lameness and sometimes paralysis. The inflammation can be caused by bacterial infection or a virus. Half the time it can be successfully treated by a combination of an oral antibiotic and vitamin B-complex or B-complex alone if it's a simple inflammation. If it's not caused by an avian virus, it will usually clear up in three to four weeks on the B-complex. Get the B-complex anywhere they sell people vitamins and pop a pill directly into her beak once a day until she's fully recovered.

What was the outcome? I have a similar situation with my SLW.

Vet game me meloxidyl (anti inflammatory) for her and she had it 2x day for 10 days. I also gave her poultry cell pellets mixed in her food. It took her about 6 weeks to get back to normal walking. During that time I kept the roosting bars out of the coop. Separated her with her two sisters from my other two grumpy pullets. They slept in separate coops, but free ranged together during the day. I never figured out what happened but X-rays showed swelling in the hock, no breaks. I figure she jumped/landed wrong?? She’s back to normal now, but I’ve added a thicker layer of litter to the coop. (She is my BIG girl at almost 2 lbs bigger than the other girls). Good luck with your girl 🤗
