Limping

Hi, sorry not updated yet as no real news as such. She still has a slight limp but I think it does seem to be improving.

We've given her (&daphne our other duck) some warm Epsom baths and some apple cider vinegar. I've been unable to buy the colourless iodine in a shop so have had to order it off eBay. So it's going to take a few days to arrive. She seems ok in herself tho.

Will carry on with what were doing and add in the iodine when it arrives. Not that she's keen haha! :)
Thanks for asking!

Thanks for update just like to keep up and see how things are going, once you start the iodine make sure to cover top and bottom with it and wait 3 days before doing it again, this is giving the first application time to work. Glad to hear she is improving.

Hia, thought I'd update you. So Deefers limp settled down and she's now back to normal. Did a few warm baths and a couple of iodine applications. However our other duck Daphne started limping a few days later and is much more affected by it.

I took her to see the vet this morning who examined her and weighed her. She doesn't have bumble foot and her exam and weight are normal. Likely sprain or a viral infection they can get which isn't routinely vaccinated against. Both self resolve. He advised Vegemite 1/8 tsp daily for 5 days and also gave us a disinfectant that we can spray on their feet which is great.

He said she should be better in 5 days. She's currently soaking in the tub!

Fingers crossed she'll start improving over the next few days. Thanks again for the help :)

Great news about Deefers but sorry to hear about Daphne I hope you see her get over it as quick as Deefers did, Vegemite?? got a link? and can you share what the disinfectant is we always like to know in case we can help someone else including our selves.. also how do Deefers feet look now? can you post pics when you get the time. Looked up Vegemite, very interesting too, seems it is very similar to Brewers yeast we use here for our flocks, made from it actually. Thanks for sharing.

The disinfectant is called f10 antiseptic.

You put 1ml in 250ml water. Then spray their feet and the decking. Doesn't need washing off.

The Vegemite is something you can spread on you toast. He mentioned it could be good for their legs, I think it contains niacin. He said just put it on their tongues.

So that's the plan and fingers crossed she seems a bit better today than yesterday!

Deefer's feet look pretty much exactly the same. I think she just has nobbles on them which is normal. But the vet said if they look inflamed that's when there is an issue. Her feet look healthy, but nobbly! :) This is a pic after her limp had gone:

The vet said they can get a virus that affects the nerve that runs near their kidneys and it can cause pain in the leg, similar to sciatica. It just resolves on its own.

Best Wishes

In the pics you posted previous it did look like she had some inflammation these pics look much better, did you try the colorless iodine at all? Glad to hear your seeing some improvement. Thanks about the antiseptic does it say what's in it? .

Yeh I know what you mean, but maybe its the angle or light on the first ones because looking at them in the flesh they don't seem different. Or maybe we caught it really early. But either way she's fine now so all good! :)

We did use the iodine once but then the vet recommended the disinfectant instead. He did agree with the iodine, but the actual iodine we've got we had to get off the Internet and the info was a bit sketchy on it so we didnt know how strong it was etc. Just to note he also said about iodine, you can use the normal brown iodine and just add a couple of drops to a dish of water until its the colour of weak tea and then let them paddle in it.

I can't see the ingredients, there's a sticker over info, but this is the website about it if that helps:

Well Daphne seems to be improving a little bit each day. She's still limping but she seems more comfortable and is getting around the garden easier. She isn't sitting down as much either. So hopefully it's going to keep going in the right direction! :)
