Here's my take on the smilies, with possible examples.
= "Wink, wink..."/indicates sarcasm in a joking way
Ex. "No, not me, I'd never come home from the feed store with more chicks.

= Expression of mild annoyance/"Heh!"
Ex. "Well, *that* was interesting.

= "Just kidding."/indicates sarcasm (or pretended annoyance) in a joking way (use with
for best effect)
Ex. "Honestly, those are the ugliest Silkies I've ever seen.
When will you be selling eggs, cuz I want some!"
= Laughter... Will be taken as "good" laughter or "bad" laughter, depending on the accompanying text...
Ex. "That joke was great!
" "You? Breed Orpingtons?
Right..." <-- Obviously not appropriate for BYC...
= Same as rolling eyes in real life/"Good grief."
Ex. "The other day, someone asked me if roosters lay eggs, and they were serious.

= "Yup, I'm awesome and I know it. Applause, please!"
Ex. "Check out this big boy that just won a prize at our county fair. Oh, yeah!

= Expression of care, sympathy, and comfort
Ex. "I'm so sorry you lost your Silkie.

= Expression of hopefulness

= Waving hello

= Expression of intense annoyance, agitation, frustration

is often used to indicate long hours spent online (on BYC... LOL!)
