Little Giant Incubator Tricks

I put my eggs into lock down yesterday and found out that the turner wasn't plugged in. Ugh! Last time I incubated, I kept coming in to check it was almost always in the same spot so I didn't think about it too much if the turner was in the same position when I checked this time. So that means these eggs were incubated without any turning. I almost have no hope for a good outcome but I'm giving them the chance to hatch.

I'm not too experienced at this but from what I have read, you are supposed to put them in the incubator and not bother them for 24 to 48 hours. So if your egg turner wasn't on, you are still on track.

If your at lockdown they have gone 18 days without turning?
Not good but who knows they might be ok
I guess we don't know what goes on under a hen
Some might miss being turned but still survive
Fingers crossed let us know

I have my fingers crossed for you. I recently gave a broody shipped eggs and I was worried since I never saw her turning the eggs like my other brooches have. I stepped in a few times to turn them myself and mark the eggs but she got so upset I was afraid she was going to break the eggs and just left them be. She hatched 6, at the last canceling I would have sworn only 3 were viable.

Quote: These eggs came from my own backyard hens so no shipping involved.

Watch for them being stuck to the shell. You may have to assist most to hatch if they made it that far.
Day 20 and one is out. Another one is pipped. It may not be a total loss. If I get two they have a buddy. If something happens and I only get the one, I have a broody that has chicks that hatched earlier this week so I can take one of hesr to put with the new chick. I'm afraid to put the new chick with her, she's pretty protective of her little brood.

May I suggest take two to be buddies with the loner . .

Oooh, an experiment. Cool. I like those! I've spent quite a bit of time storing and incubating old eggs, and manage to get quite good results from eggs that are three weeks old, when just about everyone on here says 7-10 days max.

Please report back on your results when you've run a couple of incubations.

You could always think about sitting your eggs in egg cartons, and tipping the bator side to side?
i just put in some bobwhite eggs that are almost 3 weeks old. Hoping they hatch

So today is day 21 for my roll x hatch and I have 16 out and one that turned the wrong way and drowned. I noticed this morning that there were 2 pips and 4 out. I went to remove the 4 and check the pips, and noticed that one was pipped pretty far down and part way zipped but no cheeping and not moving. When I eggtopsied, I noticed that it had its face buried down at the pointy end of the egg....

This has been a much better hatch than any so I am not disappointed, even if the other 6 don't hatch. I also have another broody. One of the ones that was broody in April and didn't get to hatch out any eggs. She has 8 under her right now and she is finally in a place where she can sit comfortably.

I am going to be chick overloaded!

Good luck with your hatch CG! When I first placed eggs in my new incubator they weren't in the turner correctly and some of them I would have sworn were goners, but 16/23 are out with only 1 loss so far! There's always hope! I will post a pic once all are out!

And just in case anyone wants to chime in, I have 13 white chicks, 2 of them with a black dot on the head and neck and 1 of those who has a GREEN splotch right where the foot and leg connect, and both with 5 toes. I have 2 black chicks and 1 chipmunk looking chick. Most of my hens are Red Sex Link, but I have a Jersey Giant, White Leghorn, White Rock, Rhode Island Red and the rooster covering was a black silkie. I also have a Black Tail White Jap Bantam Roo but I don't think he successfully mated with any of the Large hens and I didn't hatch out any bantam eggs.

I have about 5 chicks with dark skin and 5 toes and some with 1 yellow shank and 1 black/blue shank.......what colors do you think they will turn out to be?

Wouldn't the two older chicks pick on the new stranger in their midst? I don't have to worry about it any way...5 out so far. The previously pipped egg: over the course of the day, I've taken off the top shell, peeled a little bit of the membrane away from its beak (so I know it's able to get oxygen, plus I can see it move a little bit better) and put some coconut oil on the membrane to keep it from drying out. It hasn't tried to kick it's way out of the shell yet so I am assuming it is still absorbing blood and/or yolk. There was another pipped shell a couple of hours ago - maybe it's out by now, Considering the lack of turning, I will be happy with 7 chicks. This was going to be the last attempt his year and I would have loved to have a big hatch to end on positive note but I'll take what I can get.
