Live chick in trouble - graphic pics - help!

I know nothing about sick chicks but I would think if you gave him a good drink right befor you go to bed he should be ok if you slept for about 4 hours then a sip and back to bed for the rest of youre 6-9 hours or however long you sleep but I am shure someone else will know .

I would think every 2-3 hours to keep him hydrated since he is in such a warm environment.

If he starts looking stronger or holds up his head enough, maybe some in a shallow lid near him would ease your mind, stick his beak in it, maybe he will take some on his own if he
is needing it. Just not too close so he doesnt lay his head in it...

I would get some vitamin and electrolytes and mix some of that in the water.

Chicks can be shipped in the mail because since they absorb the yolk, they don't need food or water for 24-72 hours. So, I think that he is fine without food for a while now. As for hydrating him overnight, I think that is a tough call... because once they start drinking, they do it ALL the time. For the first week or so, mine only took short naps and were up constantly for eating and drinking.... so, I'm torn... because he's a newborn, he should be fine, really all night without water. On the otherhand, he's already drinking a bunch and maybe once they start, they need it more often? If it were me, I wouldn't be sleeping much anyway because I'd be worried about him and would probably check every 2 hours or so, just to be safe...

I would say even if it lives it will be deformed. Cull it if you feel you need to. This is the dark side of home hatching that people rarely mention. Sometimes you just have to have the mercy to do what's right.

At this point, I am not going to cull it - there is still hope and he appears to be in no pain. He does want/need to drink a lot, so I will wake up as needed throughout the night to give him water. Hopefully the yoke either dries up completely and falls off, or is completely absorbed, by the morning. But if not by morning, I will give him a few days for this to happen. I realize the chances of further deformity may be high, but there is still hope, and he is encouraging us with his eagerness to drink and ability to sit up and move around a wee bit.

I personally would do just as you've said you intend to do, & give time a chance. If it proves to be necessary to deal with a somehow compromised chick later, then cross that bridge when you come to it. I believe in everything in its due time. Don't rush yourself into doing something that may prove to not even be necessary. Call me an optimist if you will - but the world needs us.
