Live Earth Humate? and my own feed recipe

Thank you very much! The kelp information is just the sort of thing that I am looking for! I will read that later tonight and make adjustments to my formula.

I used 37% protein for the flax seed calculations based onthis website. It is commonly referenced here at BYC for protein calculations. I will contact my supplier, and see if I can find out what they have as protein content, as I am sure it can vary like everything else.

Just another one for you if you are interested!!!!

Type in flax seeds and then select the one listed to see the nutritional profile:

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
this one says 18%.

Yes, I had quite a time with different websites when I first started investigating protein content. I had to change my recipe many times and I credit Chris09 with saving my flock from not enough protein. There are many variations in sources reporting protein.

The Lionsgrip website isn't just about one commercial feed: it is a list of producers all over the country that sell feed components - like some sell fish meal, some sell various vitamin/mineral mixes, some sell organic corn and other organic grains, some sell premixes, some sell kelp, some sell other things. I thought you might find it useful.

I just thought it is very handy to have found such a comprehensive source list for formulating feed recipes.

And I understand about shipping costs - I am in Alaska and everything must be shipped in at high cost. I priced a bag of organic feed for around $29 from Texas (from a BYCer) and it cost $145 to ship it up here!!!

I see! The mix I am looking at will cost less than $0.50/#. I will look into the Half Moon Feed, but since they are in WA with no dealers in CA, I would be looking at shipping costs, again. I will dig more for a local-enough supplier of whole grain feed.

There are lots of people here on BYC that make their own feed, so I was really looking for feedback from some of them, more than I am looking for reasons to buy a pre-mixed feed.

Have you looked at Modesto Milling?

Ok, I think I'm hogging the thread. I will try to restrain myself, LOL!!!

Hi ChickensAreSweet! No, you are not hogging the thread - I really appreciate your postings. AND the work you put into your BYC page explaining your recipe AND how it is going with it. Invaluable.

At what age do you begin feeding the whole grain recipe? ???? I really need to know. I don't have a grinder.

I'm looking into doing this - but the mill here does not have anything but local barley. So everything else I would have to ship in. Or buy it in small quantities at the health food store - at average price of $1.30 per pound.

Only other thing grown here in large amounts is potatoes. I'm wondering if chickens can eat mashed potatoes.

I keep them on organic chick starter until around 6 weeks of age (I do sneak in a few of the tiny seeds here and there, for treats). I don't grind anything...some on BYC sprout some grains.

I hope you will be able to find/order your bags of wheat and such from the feed store!! I get everything from the feed store except split peas, peanuts, and flax seeds. Getting the animal-grade food really saves a lot of money.

There was something about potato skins not being good for chickens that I read on BYC. Maybe I saw it on the treat chart.

they say cooked, avoid GREEN parts of peels.

I am getting several of my grains and the starter for my meaties from them. With them, I have 3 options:

1) special order their products through a retailer that is 2 hours from my house.

2) place a bulk order for their bagged feed or components. There is a discount on the bags, but it costs $80 freight for a pallet, which can be anywhere from 1-50 bags.

3) place a bulk order and have them mix a whole grain feed for me. To do this, I have to order by the ton.

Right now, I am using option 1. I am trying to get others in the area to go in on a pallet's shipping with me. The more bags, the less $ per bag. I just have not yet found enough interest to make it worth it.

Chris09 and Organics North are the people that I was hoping would chime in!

Also there is Azure Standard, but I have not used them and I believe you have to have $500 min. order or get a group of people together for $500 to order. Some people have mentioned them on here and you can do a search on BYC if you are interested- or go to their website. I had to create an account to view all the prices if I remember correctly.

You can PM those two (Chris09 and ON) directly, if you wish!

G'night, all!
