I have had electric fence strong enough to contain three large horses right along where my chickens free range. If you can put the fence up higher than the chickens' heads, they will not walk into it or be harmed by it. I have never had chickens harmed by an electric fence and we've had this setup for many years. Electric fencing is relatively inexpensive and easy to put up. You're trying to keep dogs out, so you should be able to use step-in posts - also fairly cheap. I would seriously consider that as my first line of defense. Put it around the perimeter of your yard. As far as the kids are concerned, my three boys grew up with electric fence around the yard and survived.
