Saw her looking “off” and figured it was a soft shelled egg. Saw something dark in it after she passed it and this is what I found. Never seen anything like it. When I poked through the red it was regular yoke with blood coming from the red part. The red part was very vascular with a lot of blood vessels spreading through it seen in pic 2. She gets adequate calcium and lays normally other than this anomaly plus a previous soft egg about a week ago.

Thanks for any advice.

This is not an embryo that developed inside her. This is a glitch in her egg laying parts probably due to her age and or infection or cancer.

Production reds or any production hens are more prone to getting egg bound and 5 yrs just increases the chances.

I really think it’s related to age but I did recently switch her feed so I’ll switch back and see if I can’t prevent this again. Thanks everyone.

I highly doubt this happened because of a feed switch.

This was most likely a glitch due to age and or cancer.
