Before I respond, let me say I have read every post in this thread...
That statement I bolded, is a huge mis-statement. Why would the dog know better? If he has done it before, it should never have happened again because of your own security not because the dog got a clue. The dog will not get the clue without thorough professional training, building him a new cage of his own if fine UNTIL he gets out on his own, is let out accidentially etc etc and then you will face the same scene again.
I would strongly urge your parents to toughen security on the coop and enclosure, double security on his new cage and put a hot wire up...an electronic collar on him would be greatly helpful as well. A couple zaps and he will get the idea through his thick head. I have a great Pyr/Lab that I have an electronic collar on...I can hit him with enough of a zap to get his attention or enough of a zap to flip him on a full run. He gets attention gettign zaps when he so much as LOOKS at a chicken or a duck...he gets zapped with flip him strength if he moves towards a chicken or a duck.
I am sorry for your losses, I only hope your parents can take the measures necessary to make sure this does happen again.
