..look what happend.. UPDATES

I saw your update. I'm glad your step-dad is going to build a pen so your chickens will be safer. I apologize that I didn't realize that you were not an adult, and as such, probably didn't have the decision-making power to build a more secure enclosure or restrain the dog.

Hope he gets it done soon!

Before I respond, let me say I have read every post in this thread...

That statement I bolded, is a huge mis-statement. Why would the dog know better? If he has done it before, it should never have happened again because of your own security not because the dog got a clue. The dog will not get the clue without thorough professional training, building him a new cage of his own if fine UNTIL he gets out on his own, is let out accidentially etc etc and then you will face the same scene again.

I would strongly urge your parents to toughen security on the coop and enclosure, double security on his new cage and put a hot wire up...an electronic collar on him would be greatly helpful as well. A couple zaps and he will get the idea through his thick head. I have a great Pyr/Lab that I have an electronic collar on...I can hit him with enough of a zap to get his attention or enough of a zap to flip him on a full run. He gets attention gettign zaps when he so much as LOOKS at a chicken or a duck...he gets zapped with flip him strength if he moves towards a chicken or a duck.

I am sorry for your losses, I only hope your parents can take the measures necessary to make sure this does happen again.

i think this weekend were going to Home Depot or something and getting new fence'in. i'll talk to my mom about the shock collar and i'll look on ebay

I am sorry for your loss. We, too, went through something similar about a month ago. Our shepher/rot mix dog had "played" with our chickens a few times. We worked and worked with her to get her to leave the chickens alone. We thought she was doing great until she climbed into the goat pen and killed our new baby goat. My kids and I were all devestated. We ended up putting the dog down and got alot of negative feedback here on byc. People forget that they don't know the whole story and that each situation is different. I just want to let you know that the grieving period eventually gets better and you have support from your friends and family here on BYC. Good luck.

OP - this is the one I have...I have had it over a year and it works fantastic. It has a nick, a constant and a page setting...so you can zap em quickly, zap them continuously or page them when they are out of sight.

femalecbrown - I am so sorry about your baby goat...that is so sad. I do not blame you for putting the dog down....sometimes you do what you have to do.
