Look what I found in my Rhea Pen today... 1st egg of the season. I found it in the sun... so I dug a nice little impression in the dirt under a tree so that it can stay cool. Hopefully the birds will get the point and lay the rest of the eggs in the inpression i made.

I use to carve Rhea and Emu eggs, the Rhea eggs you could insert a light and it was very pretty.

My Rheas have just started breeding, but still havent dug a nest. Male's have gotten mean as a snake lol. Im hoping to hatch some greys and whites this yr if they do good.

I too hope to hatch out some greys and whites... My male is not mean yet... dont know if he will turn evil or stay calm this year... I know he my male rhea wants to kill my dog... but not me... so does that count as agression if its not directed to me? LOL

haha mine run from my little dogs, but tries to kill me...though they are only as dangerous as you allow them to be, basically they're the whimpiest of the ratites besides kiwi's lol. I've known people that bred the aggressive nature out of them by getting rid of the meaner males, and only keeping the gentle ones.

Egg # 2 Found today... and boy, did egg # 1 is Fading to white SUPER fast... I cant belive it... Its the sun that fades them right? If I have one indoors... will it hold its yellow color or will it fade over a longer period of time?

That's a beautiful egg! Thank you for sharing....I've always wondered why someone would want to raise these large birds....They just look so intimidating to me......

Sure is a beautiful egg though......
