Look what we caught today

A few days ago in my office at work, I reached down to get something out of my purse and coiled up right next to my purse was a big snake! I screamed and ran down the hall. We all freaked out and finally managed to get it into a trash can and walked it across the street to a large field and let it go. Still don't know what kind it was but, I couldn't kill it...

LOL-thanks. We are snake friendly around my house, too. We all come running to look everytime one of us sees a snake. Usually, though, it is gone before we all get to see it.

blue90292- how'd he get it in the bottle? Well, he just picked it up and put it in there. I don't make it a practice to pick up venomous snakes, but he just can't seem to help himself. He HAS to pick up every one he sees. I've watched him, though. He pins the head down and grabs the tail end, then with the other hand grabs it behind its head. Not the most intelligent thing to do, imo- but he doesn't listen to me...

LOVE this thread~LOVE snakes!! Eichenluft, you have spoken well for those of us who appreciate all God's animals (except for spiders - LOL - but I don't kill them). We have these cute little ringneck snakes here and darn if my chickens didn't find one and kill it and eat it! It was only the size of a worm and, at first, that's what I thought they had. When I finally got it away from Earline, hoping to rescue it, I saw she had already taken off it's head so I gave it back to them and they all played "keep away" until Taffy, my B.O., managed to swallow it down. I was glad Taffy wasn't laying eggs yet!

We have had several yellow rat snakes come into the yard since we got the girls. Our dogs usually corner them and bark differently. We just go out, pick them up, put them in a pillow case and relocate them. We'd do the same with a venomous snake, just using a safer method. Big R, I live in Lake County, FL as well. I understand your fear of snakes on your property, but some of us here appreciate their role in the environment. I'd rather have a few snakes than even one disease carrying rodent around my house...

Coral snakes don't bite, they have to chew on you to inject their venom since their mouth and teeth are so small. So, unless they got their mouth around the thin skin between your fingers or toes, there is an extremely small chance that you would be in any danger. Also, they are very timid and shy.

I am a Zoo Educator, so I wanted to also explain the difference between "poisonous" and "venomous". Snakes are venomous, as is anything that bites, stings or spits a toxic substance. Poisonous things are ingested, like pufferfish or some mushrooms. :)

Yes, it's time to chopsuey the snake! I'm an animal lover but why take a chance on this guy coming back to your chickens! Carefully,,,,the snake must die!

I kinda had to chuckle after reading your post and then seeing your avatar...Is that a picture of you holding that sickle? I just figured that's you gardening nowadays since the snake incident...
Once again, hope you're feeling better!

TJ

Yes TJ that's me with as the Reaper because I felt it appropriate seeing as I thought I was gonna die. lmao The wound itself has healed but finger is still swollen and sometimes still hurts. Leave it to me to be bitten by a psycho copper head. I still can't believe it happened. Usually they run away when humans come near. FYI...I gave up gardening. I live in a woodsy area and I'm not taking any chances. Good thing I know my snakes because there are different types of anti-venoms. Kudos to my brothers because we used to catch snakes as children and even had a snake pit at one time. That is until my mother found it and freaked out. lmao. At least she didn't fall in the pit!!!
