Looking for a .22 Handgun. Help?

Nothing to add to your 22 selectoin, but if you have a 9... maybe there is something you can change in your grip or stance so you can actually use it? It will have much more stopping power than a .22.

I "regularly," meaning at the range, shoot a Springfield XD9 sub compact and XD45 compact, with regular loads... and although they kick, especially with their short barrels, neither are uncontrollable if you hold them right. I've even shot them with one hand for fun just to see and as long as it is lined up with my arm, I can still get the target without much of a flip on my wrist at all. I'm not that big of a person either. I'm just a short 5'2" Asian female. If I can shoot at 45 with speer gold dots with one hand and still hit my 8x11 paper target for all 13 rounds at 30yards... I'm sure you can handle a 9mm.

I like this site, it has good info for female conceal carry.

The 22 LR is a good caliber. The next one up would be the 17 HMR, but I think they are only offered in a rifle.
I would go to gunbroker.com and search for 22 lr revolvers and semi automatics.

I is VERY easy to buy a gun on the internet, I buy and sell ALL the time and have NEVER had a serious problem with the process.

Good Luck in your find and take your time. Go to a gun store to actually put a gun your hand you are thinking about.

Do not get a heavy gun, you will dislike it eventually.

The wife had a 22 Walther and it fit her hand well.

I shoot 454 Casull, 460 S&W, 480 ruger and 45 Long Colt on a regular basis. I have been called certain names, but hey it sure is a blast to fire off a canon.

Then by all means pick up a quality .22 caliber. I've had two good friends killed by .22's, both heart shots...one self-inflicted, the other one murder...they are definitely man stoppers....there's nothing much protecting a human's vital organs from a good shot, folks have been killed with pellet guns so...

Get a long barrel and a lightweight holster. I regularly use a .22 to dispatch feral cats, possums, dogs...

There you go! I was surprised I hadn't seen anybody recommend the Mark III and then, last post, there it is. I second that.

If you are interested in a .22 for defense, you are right, it isn't much of a man stopper, but loaded with some CCI Stingers or CCI Velocitors, they can do some damage and they will definitely take out varmints. Just be sure you get some instruction in both shooting and self-defense, including coverage of laws related to use of deadly force.

UGCM

Yes, the MKIII is a nice gun. My BIL shoots one and is dead serious at 100 yards with it.

I'm no fan of CCI, though. Several years ago I decided I was going to do a "quality test" on all the different .22 ammo that I could find. Over a 2-3 week span I shot probably between 3000 and 4000 rounds. I picked up several boxes of stingers and thought to myself, "yeah, these bad boys are gonna nail it!". Nope...they were hotter than anything else that I had shot, at 100 yards they were shooting probably 12"-16" inches higher than any of the other brands, BUT....they were all over the place.

The best ammo (judeged by accuracy) was actually some Federal bricks...these weren't as hot as the CCI but consistency was *much* better than anything else including the stingers. The all time WORST ammo was some Remington that came in a round box....I was shooting and couldn't figure out why no holes were showing up on the target (viewing through a scope). I finally figured it out...the Remington weren't even making it to the target, they were kicking up sand before they got to the target!!!!

Anyhow, it might've all had to do with the particular batches at the time I did my testing...things may have changed by now (but I still have a couple of bricks of those Federals stuck back!

I second that comment on CCI Stingers. My ruger 45/22 and my 10/22 spray em all over even from a bench rest.
Most accurate I have found for the 45/22 are Eley "Team". My 10/22 does best with RWS R-100.
Both guns have factory barrels and shoot great but thinking on getting a Whistle Pig fluted aluminum barrel

.22 is a good choice, especially if you are primarily looking at self defense from the animals you have listed. Check out the Heritage Arms (http://www.heritagemfg.com/site/department.cfm?id=50). They are fairly inexpensive and actually quite accurate. They won't be the same quality as the Rugers suggested, but will get the job done. If you come across an older slab barrel H&R, grab it up as well. If going with a semi auto you will definitely want to stick with .22 lr. A revolver chambered to .22 lr will also fire shorts fine, which you will find are much quieter. The .22 lr out of a revolver will leave your ears ringing. For planned shooting use hearing protection. Buy a couple of bricks of ammo and shoot the thing a lot. If you are a novice with a hand gun, then take the advice to take a course or get some instruction. Good form will go a long way to accuracy.

Don't underestimate the lethality of a .22. They will kill a person quickly with a shot to the heart or if a major artery is clipped. A shot to anywhere in the central nervous sytem: brain/spine will disable someone, and general shots to the torso will kill, albiet slower than more serious rounds. If you really want a self defense weapon for predators of the 2 legged kind, I would recommend something larger than a .22 in the long run, but even if you get a larger caliber, a .22 is cheap to shoot and practice good form on--in addition to another handgun. You will get mixed reviews as to what caliber is the best; but what you are willing to carry, can shoot accurately, and have the most confidence in will be the one that will best serve you.

A well balanced 9mm should not seem over gunned. I've a 9mm Kahr that my 10 yr old shoots comfortably at the range.

The S&W scared the crap out of me...I just couldn't keep it from recoiling and it would send my entire arm up. I guess I'm a wimp?

The .22 is a blast to shoot, but I can't really keep a rifle with me in the bedroom. I guess I could but not exactly good for company to see. I'm not really wanting to kill someone, if I can help it, but would rather disable someone instead of do harmful damage (I'd go for the knee or groin...shame on me).

I just spoke with my cousin (all the women in my family already have their concealed carry permits! lol!)

They wanted a .22 to test with, but apparently you have to use something stronger so that you can test completely for all sorts of guns. I wish they'd just let me keep my .22 with me at all times, but I guess that ain't gonna happen.

I'm sure I can use one of my dad's pistols just to test with. Lord knows I don't want those things! If worse comes to worse, my cousins have guns I can borrow.

Found out I can take the course and be tested for $40. The license cost $100 for a five-year.
