looking for a state with cheap housing and farmland

Hi,
I'd say Ky is one of the top places to move to. Its on my list anyway,

Cost of living is very reasonable. Land, very reasonable.
I read somewhere they also have some sort of tax credit for elderly who choose to retire there, not sure what the specifics are.
Every place else has been sky rocketing and rarely has the jobs to support the values they are placing on things.
It has become ridiculous.
Take care!

My sister and BIL have 6 kids and have been looking into the "family farm" for years. Literally. They have gone all over the US looking for land and taking classes on farming and ranching and homesteading etc. I will ask them what they have found out... but.... I know the one thing they have always been concerned about is the water rights in places. In some places it is a HUGE issue, so please check into it first. And I am pretty sure the next thing that is a big issue is taxes. Good Luck with your search. Suz

Hey there,
I think someone was pulling my leg at work, but maybe you can answer. They told me if you have 6 or more kids you don't have to pay taxes, or something of that nature, since your BIL have 6 kids is that true?
Inquisitive,
Thanks!

Not even close to the truth at least here in CA. They have a bigger standard deduction on their federal taxes, but that is it. It might be different for other states. And I know you have to pay federal taxes. Boy, I wish it was so easy LOL!

It probably doesn't need to be said, but I'll say it anyway -don't bother considering California.

CA has great weather and progressive cities, but is THE most expensive place to live and raise livestock. A nice plot of acreage around here will cost one million at least (no house). I suppose if your dad is Bill Gates or you won a multi-million dollar lottery you could live out your life here (and if you figure out how please let me know!)

That said, don't count your chickens before they hatch, do lots of homework (and perhaps footwork), and say lots of prayers! Best of luck!

haha, me too!
Maybe what they meant was if you had 6 and claimed all during the year that you wouldn't have hardly anything taken out?
6+ parents, 8 total?

Who can afford that?!?!
I watch flip this house sometimes and see where they buy one for $400,000 a fix-r-up-r, and then re-sell it for $875000 or something crazy! I think about what the downpayment and monthly payment would be and wonder WHERE DO THERE PEOPLE WORK ?!?!
to be able to afford this stuff?

I guess then we wonder why foreclosures, credit card debt, etc are at all time highs. LOL!!!

I grew up in SE WV. You can keep West Virginia. Yes it's beautiful, yes land was cheap there once long ago. What land hasn't been snatched up by strip-miners,land "developers,"land speculators and other carpetbaggers;is on the side of a steep mountain or cliff and you can rest assured that the access road to it is closed half of the year either because of snow or spring thaw overflow.

I'm living the rest of my days in NW Florida. I live on 25 acres of tillable acreage and 7 acres of woods;next to state and federal forestland. Tillable acreage goes for 3.5-5K /acre. We have a climate that's USDA 1980(modified) Zone 8a,with two full growing seasons. In Northern Florida, there's three major interstate highway systems to deliver your farm goods. There's access to intermodal hubs both in Tampa,FL and Mobile,AL(Mobile is 125 miles due west of my location via I-10.)

Florida Department of Agriculture has a link on the state's website. Most of the state's municipalities (www.municode.com) allow the keeping of hens-with restrictions on numbers in flock and whether roosters are allowed or not.

Since I live amongst the sticks and weeds, out in the "country,"I "sell" eggs and chicken meat to my neighbors. My neighbors,in turn,"sell" me stuff like goats milk, cow's milk, horsehair (I make hatbands with this),pork, beef, lamb, caprine and many other goods. Why bother with a supermarket or Wally World? When you live with a bunch of country folk, all sorts of things could cross under your eyes...one should always remain open?

All y'all take care!

Would you consider Louisiana???
I know of a place for sale on a lake not to far from here very cheap.
18 acres, mostly wooded, with a 3br & 2 ba house with 600 ft of lakefront all that for only $82,000.Very chicken friendly in these parts.About an hour from Monroe,La (northeast La)

with your new windfall, want to adopt me, I already live in north carolina?? lol!! Darlene

ps---I don't live in Chatham county, but it's part of my work teritory and personally, I think it is the most beutiful, rural part of north carolina, perfect for farming, absolutely gorgeous part of the world....check there for your utopia...than file the adoption paperwork, lol!!
