looking for a state with cheap housing and farmland

Well, don't think about California. By the time you get it, that money will probably only buy you a condo.

hollyclyff : hi Chatham resident! you must mena the new and undocumented residents that are migrating there? I've heard that, it's a shame to spoil such a beautiful rural area. I loved Laura's reference to McMansions, lol!! Darlene

I wasn't even thinking about the undocumenteds. I was talking about all the new subdivisions where they come in and plow down all the trees if it's wooded, level everything and pack in a bunch of houses that all look too big for the lot they're sitting on. I'm so sick of seeing Toll Brothers signs pop up everywhere. It's like a plague.

18 years is quite a long time. I would think by that time South Dakota will still have lots of inexpensive open land. The trouble is when the snow covers the fences livestock can walk out. Atleast that is what a couple locals told me.

I really don't know what the answer is. It seems in the northern areas the soil is awesome but you only have one growing season. You also have lots of cold and snow. Heating fuels are not getting any cheaper.

In the south you have two growing seasons but the soil is mostly clay. Then you have the humidity issue. I think if you raise enough livestock in the south you can build yourself a good layer of awesome topsoil. That would remove one drawback.

I don't know how much the land is there but southern Florida near Immokalee has awesome soil and a year round growing season. It is very chicken friendly at the moment. It is probably expensive but you could do alot on less acreage due to climate.

I hope my rambling on helps somehow.

West Virginia is a Beautiful state. There are a lot a beautiful farms and land that is for sale around my area. If you are not affraid of SNOW and cold then I would look into the beautiful WILD and WONDERFUL West Virginia. I have lived here my whole life. couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Depending on what kind of place you are looking for... land can be as low as 1000 to 1500 per acre. Hope this helps you out!!
