Looking for Advice on chickens water

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

They also make nipples that go at the bottom of a bucket and prevents all things from entering. They usually learn how to drink from them pretty fast. They come pre made or you can do it yourself. Here is an example...

We just started using these and we love them. Our girls do, too.

The pitcher is what I used in the brooder and a 5 gallon bucket is in the coop. I have not had an issue with anything getting in the tiny cup where the water goes into. The horizontal nipples work great!

I use the horizontal water nipples and like it the best. I tried the bucket with the nipples on the bottom. I have too many chickens for that and had to fill it frequently. I have a food grade 50 gallon storage drum with the nipples on the sides that I use. I got it for $20 at a plant that triple rinses and sterilizes the drums for companies that put food in them. They sell extras on craigslist sometimes.

I like the idea of using it on a pitcher for chicks. They love kicking stuff into water trays and getting on top the waterer and pooping in the water. Even older birds do it. Closed water systems are the way to go.

Nice, I read good things about them also. And the chicks don't have any issue pressing them?

I started using the pitcher with the nipples when they were 2 1/2 weeks old. Next time I'll try it, when I get them, I think they could do it. It took them about 30 seconds to start attacking the nipples. The red and shinny attracts them.

I started with the recommended plastic feeders and waterers from feed store and it was such a mess, I cut out part of milk jugs no more problems spilling feed or dirty water! Still use them in the coop now but have them where they hold about half a gallon. Pic was my first attempt and my holes where too big. Lol

I use just rubber bowls and plastic or rubber buckets based on the season. Dump and refill as necessary, usually once a day. Don't use them with really young chicks.
