LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

If this is true, no chickens would be left in the world. Most likely, certain (human-influenced) breeds are susceptible to this disease. Let nature take its course, and then we won't have much to worry about.
The problem is that we would get very hungry without our chickens until they could all be replaced with resistant ones.

It would also be a huge hit on our economy.

Well you've just revealed what this is all about. - economics. Protecting industrial interests.
that is definitely a part of it but it is also to protect home steaders and preppers too. Disease does not discriminate. If not controlled, vNC would cause an extinction event with chickens in the US. We would have to start with freshly vaccinated chicks fom somewhere else.

Letting nature take it's course does not work here because of the husbandry of Domestic Animals

I seriously doubt that all breeds are susceptible to vNC. And if we kill off all breeds that are merely in the vicinity of vNC infections, how will they ever develop immunity?

I hear what you are saying. If left to run its course, I think you would eventually have strains of resistant chickens. But it's going to be very ugly process in getting there. Think of the human ebola outbreaks. A lot of effort is spent on containment of the disease where it breaks out. Should we stop that and let things run their course? Over time, the human population might be stronger for that approach, but it would be horrific while we were in the midst of it.

You point speaks to the interest in keeping a deep, diverse pool of chicken genetics by having a multitude of different breeds across our landscape, because at some point and time, we probably won't be able to stop the spread of virulent avian diseases. The same is true for agriculture. Google "Big Mike" banana to see what happens when the gene pool dwindles.

But we can encourage genetic diversity, while still be prudent about the disastrous consequences of something like letting vND run unchecked.

Absolutely. They say ebola is highly infectious, but it it never seems to spread beyond the places that are de-forested (destroyed access to natural food, i.e., fruits) and torn by war. The Ivory Coast has no history of ebola, yet it regularly eats bats as part of its diet (bats being a supposed vector of ebola), and is next door to heavily de-forested countries that have experienced ebola outbreaks.
