LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Pics
Thank you. I found the post. Very sad.
What pisses me off is that when speaking to those affiliated or in the poultry industry they all say that it’s so much better for the birds to be kept in the warehouses protected from the elements, predators, and disease. And that those of us who keep our poultry outside have unhealthy sick birds. It’s so disgusting how they think they are treating the chickens and turkeys humanely by keeping them in crowded warehouses.

It's been detected in at least 6 commercial operations in SoCal and, I assume, those birds have been euthanized too.

I don't know that I believe the state is ignoring the industry. I'm sure they inspect them regularly. And I'm sure commercial operations have very strict biosecurity to protect themselves with their whole investment and income stream at risk. I think the state is trying to protect the industry from 1) the fighting bird community who operate in as much secrecy as they can and 2) us who are more visible, law abiding and cooperative. And I think that's necessary because we, the hobbyists and cock figures as a whole group, can be and perhaps are more casual about our biosecurity.

It's not a happy thought from our perspective but it makes sense to me.

I think you are exactly right! I think the whole operation is kind of bungling. They (bureaucrats/law enforcement) don't really know who has chickens, chickens aren't required to be registered and unless someone complains about you, or YOU make your presence known, they (bureaucrats/enforcement) don't know about you UNTIL YOU make your presence known by attending their meetings, responding to their flyers, calling for information, or in the past have been on their radar for some reason. I think if it were me I would attend no meetings, make no phone calls, and in no way bring attention to myself in anyway. Bureaucrats/enforcement are under a certain amount of pressure to appear to be doing something, but don't care about chickens at all, certainly not any backyard chickens. So they will attack those who appear on the radar screen. My advice would be to all down there with healthy chickens to "fly under the radar" and not call attention to yourself in anyway. What is sad, is that this is what fighting chicken people do everyday, and are good at it. Probably have a hundred places to hide their birds.

Oh! I can't agree! I think you misinterpreted what I was saying, BrianneRN, or I expressed it very poorly.

I think we're all in this together: the state agricultural officials, the commercial keepers and us backyard hobbyists. We all have the same interest: eradicate this highly contagious virus. And by all appearances, it was the cock fighting community who hid their birds that caused the spread of this horrible virus and their continuing to that hampers its containment.

I'll fly under the radar while vND isn't in my vicinity. If it comes to a CDFA official at my door I'll escort them to the coop. I may be crying. I may feel like sh## for the months or years it takes for the quarantine to be lifted. But I'm not going to be part of the problem!

I'm invested in the time when we can freely order, share and show off our birds again and, above all, live healthily and stress-free because vND is a nasty memory. And if my contribution is tearfully saying goodbye to my flock in the greater interest, no one will have to ask me twice!

Newcastle is spread primarily via direct contact with other birds (droplet, oral-fecal) or indirectly via equipment and traffic: http://www.fao.org/3/y5162e/y5162e02.htm.

Kill zones reportedly include entire neighborhoods and even cities (Jurupa Valley) when NDV is not an airborne threat. Nor are wild birds spreading it appreciably. The ONLY way to spread it cross-property appears to be humans going between properties. This includes the commercial ranches. People generally can't get out with the chickens unless they work there.

Not suggesting that you do otherwise, in fact, if the CDFA shows up at your door, you will have little choice in the matter. However, if you involve yourself and invite their attention, you may well wind up like the Save Our Birds lady-with you and your children watching as uncaring contract workers slaughter your healthy birds. Birds that you may have had checked by a vet and certified free of disease. I hope the time comes soon when we can all breath that sigh of relief and the quarantine is lifted, but remember there will always be a next time. We can't control the disease in other countries, in wild migratory birds, or even in the fighting chicken community. The disease will not be completely eradicated. And, as I say, the fighting chicken community will not cooperate, as they are involved in illegal activities on a daily basis, though raising fighting chickens is not illegal, only fighting them is. I had a friend who once bought a property where fighting chickens had been raised and there were some that were left there, free ranging so to speak. He didn't immediately pay much attention to them, until they hatched baby chicks and he noted that the possessive mother hens would viciously fight over the chicks, often injuring them in the process. At that point, he got rid of them all...

That is good language to use. We should all start inundating inboxes with this message. It's horrific!

Thank you for sharing! I have sent a few letters, but I will send more! It's disgusting what is happening. The least the CDFA can do is make sure our pets are euthanized humanely. The VERY least.

Ooh - this has me fired up!

I know, someone needs to step in an be the organizer and point the members in SOME direction.
The other things I’ve noticed on the SOB site is: is appealing a quarantine gets you nowhere, CDFA isn’t giving euthanasia notices out now because when they do, people are moving their birds, people have no idea what to do when CDFA shows up (no one is giving direction on the SOB site, and not one public servant yet has stepped up to help when asked.
Seems as if Kerri is in some type of process of getting an attorney engaged.
