Our chickens have lost feathers on back thigh - high up and also on the leg. It is down to the skin and very red. It does not seem to be painful. The area is big --maybe 2 inch diameter. Any ideas on what it is and how to cure. I can send picture or attach somehow.

I have added a picture to my profile site. Hopefully, you can get to it.

Thanks

Rooster exhuberance can sometimes be blamed, sometimes it's feather picking, and sometimes the molt schedule is off enough to cause it, even at this time of year. Check for lice/mites (doubtfull, but possible). Verify that your feed contains at least 16% protien, but not more than 20%. In any event, the red skin is normal for chicken skin exposed to the sun. It is not painfull..........Pop

Saw the pic. That seems quite common and can sometimes be attributed to nesting behavior. I would rule out roosters and molt and then eliminate the other possibilities. Nothing to worry about, though.........Pop
