Hi just had to put down 1 of my girls just wondered if any1 on here can advice as what they think it could have been.
Didnt really notice much wrong with goldie as she is quiet and placid anyway she a 5 month golden comet they all have been laying for a month (or assuming she was as all the other 9 are) let her out the coup as usual yesturday (they free range all day) an she wet wet through all over her tail feathers and vent on closer inspection it was blood and gunk and an obvious infection which seemed to happen very quick there was early signs of magots and flies and very smelly. The only thing i noticed before hand was she walked with tail down so thought id see how she went and kept an eye on her. Can any1 think what could have caused it ? Maybe egg bound or i was thinking if an egg cracked inside. Is there any signs i should look out for as i now really paranoid for my other babies,

My guess would be that she had a vent prolapse that then attracted the flies... and also probably attracted some cannibalism from a few flock mates.

The good thing.... is that it is NOT contagious.

You can decrease the risk of the other girls getting a prolapse by making sure that they always have oyster shell on the side. Low calcium levels can increase the risk or prolapse.

HOWEVER, with that said, I am sure that there was nothing much that you could have done. High production breeds are prone to prolapse, and often even if you catch it early and help to put it back in, it tends to reoccur.

:hugs

Thank you so much for your reply thats put my mind at rest abit.
Its quiet hard to get oyster shells for chicken here (greece) but ill order some i do regularly feed back crushed egg shells and they have cuttle fish bones as and when they want for extra calcium. Think ill be checking more regularly horrible thing to go through not nice for the gubby to do as they more like pets not food lol xx
