Lost 52 today..

Sorry, any dog that chases my flock gets shot, and I'd be tempted to toss the carcass on their porch, though I probably would settle down enough to SSS. Don't care that it's the 'natural' behaviour for the dog, or that it's a bad owner not a bad dog, it'd be a dead dog. I love dogs, but I'll protect my birds, I'd be a bad chicken owner if I didn't. It's a chicken's nature to be prey for predators like dogs too, doesn't mean I would allow it! I trap raccoons and opossums and such that harm my birds, it's absolutely no different for dogs.

If I could catch a dog who was normally kept in it's yard and it was just a one time thing before it got in a frenzy, (if you doubt the word frenzy, you haven't seen dogs killing a trapped flock of chickens) I would do so and return it to the owner, but one of these dogs bit her father, they've devastated her flock, and are proven to be out of control. It's like she said in the interview, "What's next?" What if they're loose when the kids are out waiting for the school bus, or an elderly person in their own yard?

I've had dogs that wouldn't dream of chasing the chickens, because I trained them long and well. I've had one that I couldn't teach the tendancy out of him, I was careful with him and he lived a long happy life anyway, but he didn't get a chance to chase either my chickens, goats or anyone else's livestock. I knew if he chased the neighbors' livestock, he'd get shot, and I might have to make reparations. That's how it works. It wouldn't matter that I couldn't afford to pay much, I'd owe it to them. That lady is not just a bad dog owner and a bad neighbor, she's a poor excuse of a human being.

I'm really sorry for such a big loss Aimee, I hope you can recover from it and I hope your father is alright. I'm sure that was a terrible thing to come home to.

ugh, I HATE this for you! I'm soo sorry:(I LOVE dogs, but your chickens were not just your pets, but also a source of income, so the dogs come in second here

That is just unforgiveable that that lady would allow the dogs to run loose again. I can't believe people! I hope you get it resolved, the dogs gone and a lotta compensation from that irresponsible neighbor.

I am so, so, sorry. I'm so glad your pursuing things though. This woman needs a hard hit in the pocket book. Hopefully, that's where she keeps her brain.

I agree with folks that it's not the dogs fault; it's the owners fault. Unfortunately, in cases like this, knowledge of who has fault really has no bearing on anything. The dogs will have to be dealt with, and if it means shooting them while they are in the act of slaughtering the rest of her chickens, then that's what needs to be done.

Plus suing the pig who owns the dogs. Please keep us updated Aimee, I wish the best for you.

Wow so sorry about your loss. I would DEFINATELY be going to court. Some dog's in this area have been put down by property owners and livestock owner's due to Dummie's that don't care about their dog's or anyone else's livestock or family pet's.I personaly had to place a couple of strays or drops off and a couple of addoptee's in the past due to the fact they just weren't poultry friendly.I lost some bird's due to some neighbor's dog's also so I know how you feel.I hope the owner will have to pay you for your bird's.One neighbor paid for 2 birds his GF's Heeler killed and luckily she left with the dog though. It's hard enough dealing with wild animals keeping them safe but dog owners should only have to be warned ONCE!But it still doesnt bring the bird's back

. It's expensive a lot of work and if you are like me they are just like the family house pet's and you get very attached to them.Let us know how thing's go. Hugggzzzz for you and your bird's.

Iam also glad to see media coverage lets just hope it gets something going . Sorry for your losses, it's such a shame when dogs or animals are allowed to run loose something is going to be killed either our chickens or other pets or the dogs running loose. I think that is all of our worse nightmare.

IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS MAKE ME SICK!!!! argh

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:.... I LOVE all animals but what i hate is an irresponsible owner. If that had happened to me guess what would have happened. Everyone in my redneck family would run out the house with guns in their hands and it would be open season on the dogs. dont get mad i wouldnt want to kill any innocent animals. but from what you are describing these are perfect examples of dogs that need to die. Vicious and Bravery are2 terrible traits to have in a dog.

if it were me i would sue
1. for the price of all your chickens
2. all the income you will be losing since you dont have them
3. your time and money in raising the now dead chickens
4. your money and time in raising new chicks
5. the money that you spent on putting up that fence that didnt help!

all in all i would sue for about 20,000 to 25,000 dollars. or you can just compromise and ask for less if your neighbors will do something with your out of control beasts.

i may be overly mad right now so i may sound like a lunatic but seriously this makes me so mad.

o and my neighbors dog comes in my yard all the time and digs in my flowerbeds!!!! 1 time my dog crossed the property line onto his property he called me and told me that if my dog EVER went on his property he would shoot her in between the eyes. needless to say we have our house on the market and i am buying some land with no neighbors anywhere near me and just fields!!!!!

Livestock is hard to manage & definitely hard to replace . It takes time & money then all the sudden bam it's gone because some irresponsible neighbor. I wouldn't let the neighbor off the hook.
