Sounds like a coon reaching in and pulling them through the holes. 1" grid is just too big. A weasel can comfortably fit through 1" grid. Coons have no problem reaching through 1" and ripping out anything they can get their hands on. Good luck keeping your birds safe. If you can afford it, use 1/2" hardware cloth for defense against coons.
