Came home early last night to secure my remaining 5 chickens. Discovered this morning I failed to close and lock. Probably raccoons, woke up to those heartbreaking piles of just feathers.

Totally my fault. I did this last month, and have a solar automatic door kit to install this coming weekend.

My poor chickens. I am sick about it. Have y'all restarted again after this?

That big empty coop is so sad.

So sorry for your loss. :hugs :hugs

No, I haven't, but I have accidentally forgot my birds out all night more than once. I'm in a low predator area (though the coons and what not do come through), so I've been very fortunate that this hasn't happened to me, yet. Again, so sorry for your loss! Get that door on and try again. The good 'ol memory gets even the best of us, so it's not entirely your fault. :hugs:hugs

No auto door here.
I have a walk in coop, and manually close and open my chicken coop.
I not only close the chicken door at dusk when I see everybody had gone to roost, but also check in the roost room for sneaky possums that like to get locked in with them so they can feast overnight.!!
No auto door for me.
Sorry about your chickens. 😒

Having an automatic door doesn't require you to remember anything.
Sounds like a winner now go get some more!
Update: I installed the auto door- really proud of myself. Also hung netting over the run for hawks and have been plugging up some tiny gaps where a rat had been getting in.

Put together the start of a small bantam flock and they are settling in. My new rooster is really fun. Ordered some chicks from Cackle, delivery early feb.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm feeling better!

I'm happy to hear you have an automatic door for your chickens and have more coming in February! Congratulations! Merry Christmas!

I round mine up every day before dark. The young ones are less 4 months old. They wait until its dark to go in unless its cold or raining. They hid from me a couple times back in the summer when it was warm out (they're half leghorn so that's normal)Independent birds
