Lost my dog today

I got up this morning, started my daily routine.
Put on some coffee.
Feed the chickens.
Feed the cats.
Feed the dog...
I actually put out a plate of dog food.

While I was drinking my 1st cup of coffee it hit me.
I've been doing this routine for so long it was just automatic for me to put out the dog food.

Old habits die hard.

I finished my coffee and gathered all the dog food, treats, toys, etc... will give them to my neighbor this afternoon, he just brought home a stray that was on the side of the interstate so he'll need this stuff now.

I'm going to go hug my cats and chickens now.

oh i am so sorry, that is very sweet to offer the items to your neighbor who rescued a dog.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy no matter how much you think you have yourself prepared. 13 for a big dog is a long life so you must have given him the best of care. But knowing that STILL doesn't make it any easier to deal with. I know you will miss him and I'll be thinking about you and your family.

rooster-red, so sad to hear about your dog, he was beautiful. I had a Malamute a few years ago and he was such a blast, especially in the winter time, pushing snow with his nose and I miss that low mournful howling. I know he will always be in your heart and your memories are priceless.

If and when you might feel up to it please share some stories about him. Take care and give those chickens and cats some extra hugs

Your dog was beautiful. I really am so sorry... What was his name if i can ask? I lost a husky/chow mix about 4 years ago and still think of him. It was so hard back then though and i know how you and your family are feeling. He is at peace now, at rainbow bridge. I have gotten a couple other dogs since and have his son, but none can ever replace his uniqueness.

His name was Spaz, (My children were very young at the time and they named him) because when he was a puppy he was so spastic that he would bounce up and down for several minutes each time we came around him.
Not the name I would have chosen for a 100lb. Malamute/Wolf mind you, but thats what they called him.

He was the perfect guard dog for inside the house, he wouldn't bark if someone came to the door, he would position himself by the hinged side of the door and wait absolutely silent until we told him it was ok.

I'll never forget the time the cable repair guy came to the door while I was on the phone and tapped on the door which I guess didn't close right because it swung open just a little. I yelled for the guy to wait a minute but he didn't hear me and just walked on in.

He instantly had 100 lbs. of snarling dog hit him in the chest knocking him down flat on his back.
I put the phone down and ran to the guy and Spaz was standing on his chest with his teeth bared about 2 inches from this poor guys nose, saliva dripping onto his face, the poor guy couldn't even speak!

I told Spaz NO and in a second he was my gentle dog again.
We didn't get the cable fixed.
The cable company refused to send a repairman out even though I told them I would lock the dog in a bedroom or chain him outside, so I cancelled service.

I'm so happy to hear that your hybrid was so sweet. I'm thinking about getting one myself and the feedback so far has been very negative. I know they're crafty but I like for an animal to keep me on my toes. If it wasn't for my animals I'd be lazy and 300 lbs.

You never really get over the pain of losing a beloved pet but you'll always have the great memories. :aww
