Today I lost my first ex battery hen. Flora was a ISA Brown the more commonly used hens for this purpose. She had been unwell for some time and losing weight. She had been eating and drinking fine and out and about with the others but didn't have the same stamina and would often stand hunched up. Yesterday we found her in the run on her side. We bought her in and put her next to the radiator with some yoghurt and fresh water. She did seem to perk up but couldn't stand and seemed in pain. Sadly she died today. I had a closer inspection and I believe she had a tumour as her belly was hard and caused her pain for me to touch. She had quite a bad smell coming from her. She is now in a better place and she had the last 15 months of her life in freedom being able to be a chicken not an egg machine. Bless you Flora.

RIP little one. I know you spent a little time in heaven on earth before you passed, and know you will be missed.
