Really sad and perplexed. My one Buff Orpington, only a year old. When we let them out this morning, she seemed fine, ran out and started pecking and scratching like normal. About 30 min later I looked and all the girls were huddled around Buffy, who was lying by the fence. I went out and she was gone. Looked perfectly normal, not a scratch on her.

Sorry for your loss.

Some hens may pass abruptly, without no warning, there is not much we are going to be able to tell/ or do simply going off of her symptoms over the internet. If you want, you can send her body (If you still have it) to your state veterinary lab. Some states offer it for free, or for a minimal fee.

Thanks, what's so perplexing is that there were no noticeable symptoms. She was running around just like the others. Then suddenly she wasn't.

We lost one that way. I had let them out, then talked to my husband for less than 10 minutes before walking back past the coop where we found her dead in the grass. Probably a heart attack or stroke - at least it was fast and she didn’t suffer.

It’s hard to lose a hen, especially one as young as yours.

Orp are known to experience fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome which COULD cause sudden death... Genetics usually couple with excess treats or not having a balanced diet. Most folks will presume heart attack, but the only way to know for sure is getting a necropsy at your state vet lab or MAYBE seeing what YOU can see doing it yourself, Contact info..
