In this case, Becky, I think we were dealing with something more than little "Fluffy" from up the street. In that case, inviting the errant mutt into your car might not be a bad tactic.
But for the usual semi-rural chicken killing stray, I wouldn't recommend it. There is much unknown about them:
You don't know where they've been, or how skittish they are, how close to feral they may be, etc. Strays are as liable to bite you or others out of fear as anything else. This is made worse if they are hungry and/or feral or near-feral. Since you can't possibly know their situation at the outset, it's best to do as animal control people do: keep them at noose pole length until you can determine the dogs condition.
For your own safety, strays are best kept at a distance. Besides, they're not likely to come to you, no matter how nice a car you have.
