Lost one of my birds to a dog (He's Back w/ friends)

In this case, Becky, I think we were dealing with something more than little "Fluffy" from up the street. In that case, inviting the errant mutt into your car might not be a bad tactic.

But for the usual semi-rural chicken killing stray, I wouldn't recommend it. There is much unknown about them:

You don't know where they've been, or how skittish they are, how close to feral they may be, etc. Strays are as liable to bite you or others out of fear as anything else. This is made worse if they are hungry and/or feral or near-feral. Since you can't possibly know their situation at the outset, it's best to do as animal control people do: keep them at noose pole length until you can determine the dogs condition.

For your own safety, strays are best kept at a distance. Besides, they're not likely to come to you, no matter how nice a car you have.

I agree with you David! 100%...a feral dog will never jump into your vehicle. However my post wasn't so much for the OP but for the hundreds of people who might have a similar problem and search the forum for possible solutions.

If I was in the OP's situation (dogs seem very aggressive), and I hope I never am then I would use the live trap method and wait to see if an owner shows up....etc. Although it seems Animal Control finally came through for her.

While I personally don't have a problem killing a pred thats killing my flock, I understand how some people wouldn't be able to do that....my DH being one of them. And I also understand about gun regulations...I'm Canadian...we know gun regulations.

I just wanted to put an option out there for the people whose problem may not be so dangerous and therefore you want to give the dog and owner a chance at redemption.

At least you have an animal control to call.our co. doesn't have animal control of any kind,People just drop off their animal anywhere in the country Iguess they just hope someone will take them in. Or just don't care. We do have dogs that used to come around, but DH shot near them and scared them enough that they stay pretty well away from us. I would suggest a paint gun or a pellet gun. If nothing else will give you a good chance for target practice.
