NO YOU WOULD NOT AS IT IS A FEDErAL CRIME TO DO SO.
The only thing you is protect them with netting of some sorts. Call you local Dept of Wildlife and ask about a nuisance permit to get rid of the hawk...but without one you can face fines and/or jail time for harrassing, harming or killing one...even for possessing a single feather.
Unless you kill it to protect your livestock. This is a loophole in the protection act. Verify this through your local Dept. of Wildlife and local Sheriff's office. But I feel that the 12 gauge shotgun would be a safer and more effective control.
i haven't had any missing hens, as I keep mine closed up and only let them out if I am in the yard.
i was out walking in the snow last night, and my DH has a corn feedef for the deer - as I was nearing it I saw a very large owl and also the biggest hawk that I had ever seen. in the snow I could see the tracks of a chipmunk and at the end of his tracks an imprint of the owls wing in the snow where he had swooped down on the munk.
Called local Wildlife Mgmt and US fish & Wildlife. No joy. Absolutely no way of managing this problem except through containment. Local Wildlife office did say that Coopers will move on when source is removed. So flock will be jailed until leaves are out, then we will try to range again. Thx all!
You need to roof, asap.
If you are caught killing a raptor, the fines at in the *thousands* of dollars and some states will incarcerate.
It's a federal offence too.
You must get the run covered, and expect more than hawks now that a bird has been killed.
Sadly, covering the run is the only thing that really works. My poooooooooor girls have been on lockdown since Saturday. I've always free ranged, but these last two weeks we have been discovered by hawks. You name it, I've tried it. Saturday a hawk swooped down and took one of my little Polish hens with me standing RIGHT THERE!!!!! That was the final straw. My poultry netting was just delivered today.

I just want say that's not true unless the FEDERAL GOVERMENT issues you a special permit in your case.
