Definately put a door between the run and coop, just in case something gets into the run, and lock it.

I lost my entire first flock to a weasel. Mourned for a bit and then built a better coop. I think most of us have made mistakes our first time around. I still lose some every now and again. I live next to the woods so we have fox. Each time I get a little smarter.

i'm thinking autolocking carabiners on our latches.

I used to use those carabiners, but now I use tumbler locks, and I love them! No keys to lose, and all the locks have the same combination. They are perfect for our son who has fine motor skill delays.

Think of it as a process of evolution. Each loss forces you to think about mistakes and solutions. It's an ongoing learning process. It's sad to lose birds, but the more you learn, the less you lose.

For easy access, I bought the combo locks you can set a 4 letter word as the combination. Handy as heck and the raccoons around here are smart, but cant spell!

I have /would never use hardware cloth for that reason i use 16guage 1'x1' welded wire for my run and 1/4×1/4 16guage welded wire on my coop a solid top on my run or you could do the 1'x1' wire all around the run and I have cinder blocks around my run then I do the hot pepper trick around the whole thing i use ghost peppers you can use the hottest peppers you can get your hands on crush them especially the seeds poor it around your run and coop reapply every month or after a big rain it deters predators all of them
