Lost Scout

Ruby didn't struggle this time. She knew there would be no gain from it. She winced at the tight bindings and the not so clean cloth.used as a gag.

Already tired from the hours of labor, as well as the lack of nourishment, Gytha found herself struggling to keep up the quick sprint, but did not dare slow down yet. She ran, roughly north, until every breath burned and her lungs simply could not suck in enough air to maintain her pace. She did not doubt that soon the orcs would be sending a group out to re-capture her, so still she pushed on, though much slower and now taking more care to step carefully and cover her trail. This part of the Greywoods was unfamiliar to her, but not far ahead she could see the terrain started up an incline. If she could gain the top, perhaps she could better survey the land and increase her chances of evading the orcs. So, lungs still screaming, she starting forcing her tired body to climb the hill...

The creature which had followed her into the trees continued on her trail at a slower, but steadier pace. Using a combination of man tracking techniques like footprints and broken branches, he also seemed to have a pretty keen sense of smell which be began to rely on more heavily when Gytha started covering up her tracks better. He could sense her exhaustion and her anxiety as he got closer, but slowed his pace enough that he didn't catch up to her right away. Instead he maintained enough distance to see glimpses of her at times, but was hesitant to approach her outright.

Now that she wasn't struggling so much, Orkhan took half a step away from her and joined Mulush. "What did you have in mind?" He asked in orc tongue.

After his boot missed, Orkhan settled for catching the rope from Mulush and reaching for her hands to bind them. With no regard for how fragile a human's wrists might be compared to his own, he bound her hands tightly behind her back and left her sitting up against the wall. From there he took a dirty cloth and tied it around her head to act as a gag, he was tired of listening to her disrespectful comments.

"Could cook it later," he suggested, speaking the orcish tongue, as Orkhan finished binding the girl's hands. "The one from last night'll be tough, but this one should be tender," his mouth was already salivating at the thought.

Looking up at the other slaves and finding them all gawking and none of them working, he hollered. "GIT TO WORK!" He raised his whip, threateningly. His eyes scanned the line and though he wasn't particularly bright, he thought something seemed wrong. But the humans looked about the same to him, so he didn't immediately notice which slave was missing.

"Hey..." he said to Orkhan, "We short one?"

Ruby didn't understand the orc language so she just sat still, waiting to see what would happen next. She glanced around, hopeing at least some of the humans had taken the chance to run.

The scout paused suddenly, whipping her head around to study the forest behind her, thinking she had heard something not far away. But her eyes did not locate the creature trailing her. She waited a few moments to convince herself that it was nothing more than a squirrel or some other small forest creature, then continued her climb, glancing back frequently.

As she reached the top of the hill, she let herself stop to get her bearings. The road was somewhere north of here, though she didn't know how far, and the settlement was roughly north and west, so she figured her best bet was to head roughly north. Steeling her resolve, she set off again, but could not shake the feeling the something was close behind...

"Short? Whadya mean we're short one?" Orkhan turned around and scanned the crowd of workers. Although he wasn't sure how many they had started with, he did notice an empty station next to the new girl they had brought in last night. "See that?" He looked suspiciously at Mulush, "she shouldn't be by herself."

Danielle seen Orkhan looking closely at her and lowered her gaze instantly. Why were they so interested in her? She didn't done anything wrong!

Mulush stormed over to Danielle and grabbed her by the shirt. "WHERE DAT ONE AT?" he demanded, pointing to the spot where Gytha had been standing a short while before.

Gytha's instincts were accurate, as there was something following her. Closely, but not too closely. He honestly kept his distance, letting her get further away from the orc settlement before he finally approached her. As she started down the hill, the creature let the distance between them begin to diminish. He didn't want to startle her so badly that she ran, but eventually he would have to speak to her.

He quickened his pace, and veered slightly to the right so that he could overtake her without alerting her of his presence. Then he planned to reveal himself in front of her, to lessen the chances of her bolting off again. His footsteps were quiet, but he wasn't perfectly silent as he slipped past her, eventually ending up in front of her. Standing alertly, but in a non-threatening manner.

Danielle cowered with fear and covered her face with her hands to avoid looking directly at him at all costs. "I don't know, I don't know, I swear I don't know..." She whimpered through tears. "Please don't hurt me, she ran for the trees... I swear that's all I know!"
