Lost Scout

While Anna explored the room, Gytha found the wall again with her hand and sunk back to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. "Do you think there are others... in Aberdeen, I mean... that are on the side of the orcs?"

While Anna explored the room, Gytha found the wall again with her hand and sunk back to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. "Do you think there are others... in Aberdeen, I mean... that are on the side of the orcs?"
Anna paused in her search, thinking. She shook her head after a while "Hard to tell, I wouldn't have thought them capable of betraying us to the orcs." She sighed and continued her blind search of the room. "I don't think so, but it wasn't something I was watching for." She added then almost tripped on a crate. She ran her hands over the crate lightly, trying to see if it could be opened.

Everything had been so quiet, so peaceful all summer that Gytha knew Anna hadn't been the only one lulled into a false sense of security. Even Lord Ragnar had thought they were safe enough to send her out on her own. That thought triggered another, and a particularly nasty one too. "If Charles knew about the orcs, do you think he convinced Ragnar to decrease the patrols? He probably planned it to have the orcs ambush me when I rode out alone!" The scout's hands clenched into fists as these thoughts ran across her mind, wondering just how deep the betrayal ran.

Vorgak's mouth curled up into a cruel smile as the scent of horse and human grew stronger. It had taken the orc trackers almost two hours to catch up to Strider and the group of escaped slaves, but he knew they were drawing close. "None escape this time," he said quietly to Orkhan. "Take half and circle around. My half will hit 'em from behind."

"It is possible, from the little they said I got the sense that this deal has been in place for a long time." Anna said then cursed as her hand slipped and she cut herself on the crate. Tears stung her eyes as she pulled her hand to her chest.

Strider had made sure the escapees were settled for the night long before. At the moment he sat, cleaning his weapons and thinking as he kept a lookout for the humans. He glanced to Ruby, sleeping with the others, her hand never far from her sword now that she had it back. He had held off asking anything, wanting to get her to the settlement before anything else happened. He shook his head and looked back out to the forest, watching for any unusual movements or sounds

"Convincing him to send men out after the orcs will be the hard part," Laethros said, pointing out the risk in the plan. "He is sometimes slow to act unless it is clear there is no other choice." He let out a short laugh, "Course, we could pressure him a bit more. Arrange it so I... or maybe Charles here needs rescued. 'Less you need him elsewhere?"

Charles looked up suddenly from his thoughts, feeling a small twinge of nervousness at what Laethros had just volunteered him for.

"Not at all, he could certainly be spared for the 'rescue'." Gomez glanced back at Charles with a slightly twisted, amused smirk. Then he added jokingly, "Ragnar wouldn't hesitate to send a team after someone with such a pretty face, it would harm his image if he didn't"

As they neared the lower half of the cave Gomez paused to listen, he didn't hear the tell tale sound of running water which would have instantly alerted them to a flooded tunnel. "So far so good..."

Orkhan nodded silently, refraining from speaking in case the slaves were closer than they thought. He waved to Draugnot with his free hand, carrying the mace in the other. The pair of orcs broke off from Vorgak and began making their way in a large arc around the temporary camp that Strider, Ruby, Danielle and the other slaves were staying. In no hurry, the pair walked slowly, carefully avoiding stepping on twigs or brush which would give their position away.

Strider narrowed his eyes and stood. He put his sword away and picked up his bow, walking quietly out into the forest. He wasn't sure what he had seen, just a movement that could have easily been an animal, so he didn't alert the others. He approached the place with caution, eyes flicking from one shadow to another as he searched for any signs or other movements.

"Charles only came to Aberdeen at the beginning of summer..." Gytha said out loud. If Anna was right and the deal had been in place for that long, could Charles already have been plotting with them even before he had arrived?

"Are you okay?" she asked, hearing the other girl curse, but unable to see what had happened.

Anna pulled a handkerchief out of her pocket and wrapped it around her hand "Yeah, I think so, just cut my hand on this crate" She answered and tied it as well as she could in the dark. She used her other hand to move the loose board that had caused her trouble and after a brief hesitation felt around inside.

(What should she find?)

Charles felt his mouth harden at the jab, self conscious of the pox scars adorning his features.

"So the way is clear and we have a plan," Laethros said. "I think the next time we meet, things should get interesting."

I'm good with it if you make up details.)

"Oh," Gytha said simply, then rested her head back on her knees, too tired and miserable to give much thought to what might be found in the crates.
