"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just got a call from someone at my house doing some work and they said that this was found walking in the road near my property line. :th

I think one of my girls set up camp in the woods and hatched some babies. Now I have to go and look for the nest when I get home. :barnie When will it end?????

Fed my chicks some cantaloupe tonight....one of them decided to lay down on it and started rubbing itself all over it like a dog does.... Was fluffing its feathers out and covering it so the others couldn't get to it. Got to ask if this is normal??? It was funny to see

Well Terri, I have some VERY sad news to report. YES, that is a SCOVIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :barnie

After I got the call on yesterday telling me this little baby was roaming in the road, I got VERY nervous and tried to wreck my brain as to where did this little baby come from. Well, I got home and to my surprise a Muscovy hen had laid a nest of eggs about 3 feet from the back fence of the chicken yard. She was so hidden in the woods, I would have never found her. I don't know how many eggs she had laid but she hatched 5 babies. The one in the pic appeared to have been the last one that hatched. It was weak and had some fur missing. There was another one that had walked a LONG way from the wooded area and ended up in the chicken yard. I assume that it was following the mother when she got off of the nest to eat and it made it's way in with the rest of the animals. We were able to get her to walk away from the wooded area, down the road, into the chicken yard and into a stall. I took the weak baby duckling and placed it under a hen. It was cold and the mama wasn't ready to set and let the babies get under her. She was busy eating and drinking. I checked on the baby duckling this morning but it didn't make it. It was too weak. The other babies and mom are doing good. I think she has 5 babies.

I guess she outsmarted me. She knew that I didn't want them to hatch any babies but she had her own plan in mind. :barnie I'll try to post pics of the babies tomorrow.

In addition to her having a nest, I have yet ANOTHER turkey hen that set up camp in the SAME bush in the front of the house as the last hen. :barnie I happened to be standing near the bush and something caught my attention. I looked in the bush and THERE SHE WAS SITTING ON ABOUT 20 TURKEY EGGS!!!!!!!!!!! :barnie :th

I don't think I"m going to make it this summer. I'm stressed out with all of these animals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :barnie

I picked up some Buff Orpingtons from a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago, 3 girls and 2 boys. The hens are right at 13 months old and have never been allowed to free range. So I let them out for a little while yesterday to slowly introduce them to the rest of my flock and they acted like my shadow following me everywhere. I don't have a scale but I think these girls are bigger and heavier than my biggest Rooster. 2 of them are not quite finished with their molt but talk about some nice looking hens. The cockerels are only3 to 3.5 months old so it will be a while before I can use them but boy are they going to be big!!

Here are some pics of the hens...

Hey Julie, my father in law lives in carencro, and I'm looking for a couple of laying hens for him. Do you have anything, or know I someone with some pullets or young hens? I only need a couple. They can be muts as long as they like to lay!

I don't have any hens for sale but I can check around for you. If I find someone, I will let you know.
