"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Mine are 11 days old and are going out to the barn in the morning! They look about the same, but are too messy for the brooder room. They generate so much heat, I can't lower the temp enough to acclimate them, so tomorrow they get a new home inside of a dog pen that is set up in the barn. They are too small to free range yet, but they will be out of the house. How many did you get? I got 50 !

i got 25 but only 22 made it past the first day and are all doing great now, but you are right they do put out alot of heat and mine will be moved outside by the end of the week i just cant keep em cool enouph, and im having to change the litter pan and clean it everyday, these little buggers are like machines lol but i found out through my kids 4-h i can get another 25 in december for 10 dollars so i will probably be getting some more for them to show and finish filling the freezer.

Is everybody's birds going through a heavy molt this year? Mine usually molt Spring and Fall, but not like this year! I went to the barn a week ago and it looked like a pillow fight had gone on ! LOL Then then yesterday, they had to have used a feather mattress. I guess all of the pillows were empty. Today the turkeys were dropping feathers as I watched. My hens lay 6 to 7 eggs a week in Summer and 5 in Winter. Out of 80 or so hens, I am barely getting 18 eggs a day. Customers are telling me that I am getting more than most. The guy at Hammond feed usually sells his in the store, but he said he hasn't gotten more than 1 or 2 a day for about a month now! I have never in 7 years seen this! Do you think it is an indication of a really cold winter coming? On another thread, a lady in CO., said she never saw such bug thickly furred wolves around before. My rabbits have nice winter coats, already and the daytime temps are still in the 80"s ! Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this and what you are experiencinmine a
mine are just starting to finish their molt alot have already finished and started laying, its getting a little better but im still only getting anywhere from 6 to 12 eggs a day from about 30 hens, i thought it might have something to do with the weather constantly changing but dont really know

Yes I too find I am having a good bit more hens going thru a "hard" molt this year more than some in the past but too it is a lot of mines first real molt too and this is all relative to how old they are and when hatched last season. I find too that some breeds just struggle more than others; a white plumed and your more solid colored ones (buff, reds ect )will not go thru the hard lengthy molt as long as the more designer(party colored) birds do as it takes more time and energy to make these type feathers. Anyway hope everbodies stock gets done sooner before the weather comes in as it will be easier on them and more likely for them to start up production sooner. I always feel for those ol gals that are 3/4 "nekkid" in Dec. and Jan. and too wonder (WHY!)? LOL

Where did you find that kind of deal? I paid 63.44 for 50 from Meyers and they were all female, instead if straight run as stated. If they have more at that price, I am definitely interested!

About half of my birds are Black Giants, Black Australoups, Black Copper Marans, Cookoo marans, Black EE,
The others are Wyndotties, Rocks, Succux, and I can't remember them all. The turkeys are White Holland, The ducks are Pekin and Rouen And all if these are shedding. Tghe pullets are not, but they are just starting to lay. The chinese and brown african geese don't seem to be asd far as I san see. Both dogs, buth cats and 22 rabbits are also shedding! Feathers look like snow on the lawn!

Mine are going through a moult but I don't think it's any heavier than usual. Most of them are older birds. The peacocks are finished molting & the boys already starting to grow their new tail feathers. lol about the feather mattress - I thought the same thing a week ago! feathers all over the place! Out of 15 hens only been getting 2-3 eggs a day. My youngest birds, the RIRs have not molted yet.

ahhh, you have my favorite breed, black australorps! i will be looking for some as soon as the feed stores get them in! so glad to see them in louisiana, you are the first one i see that has them! are they gentle birds? i have heard that they are extremely docile! can't wait to find some chicks to raise and then breed!

Good Morning Everyone!!!!

Can someone ID these poults, my lil Sis bought some and they're supposed to be Bourbon Reds but the guy isn't sure of the breed, sex or age. Thanks

How much picten? If you don't mind my asking!
pop.gif
I don't use pectin in this recipe,.. kumquat rind has a fair amount of natural pectin so this and many other recipes don't call for pectin to be added,.. we like the way this recipe sets up ,.. it takes about a week to set completely,.. but it has a nice, spreadable consistency,.. if you want a firm, jelly-like marmalade,.. you would have to go by the pectin's recommendation for citrus.
