"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Morning all!

Woke up to 8 little chicks and 0 water in the 'bator. None at all. So I worked quickly to get them out and added a wet paper towel and some water to the reservoir. The egg from yesterday (first pipped) is still not out and barely breathing. He made no progress last night.

2 more have hatched since then but I don't dare open it. There is also an egg that was SO CLOSE to hatching when I added the water, and it looks like I may have "shrink wrapped" him. The membrane is retracting to his body and getting darker.

Actually, looking again, I can't tell which egg that actually is. The 2 chicks are playing football and the other eggs are rolling around.

Those 2 eggs can both breathe, so I'll just leave them for now. Now onto pics:

^^^This was the one I nicknamed Gimpy. His couldn't stand for a while, but now I can't figure out which one is him.

The other chicks kicking the eggs around disorients the unhatched ones usually and they die in the shell. At lockdown (18th day)If you will put those eggs in some styrofoam egg carton bottoms cut into 4x4 or 6x6 sections so they cant be tipped over easily cut a dime sized hole in the bottom, the eggs will stay uprighted and the chicks can more orient themselfs for hatching makes a lot of difference. I have learned this from the "school of hard knox" esp if dealing with expensive/rare bought eggs where one would want/need a very good%hatch rate.

For those of you who remember me talking about the neighborhood rabbit (have no idea who it belongs to) that has been loose for about 6 months and surviving by eating the feed that are in my feeders,......... well his free ranging spree ended about 11:00 PM last night when I went "WABBIT" hunting. I ran him down for about 45 minutes. We were both so tired but I prevailed in the end. He was NOT a happy camper. He SQUEALED like a hog going to the butcher. I think he woke up the neighborhood. He was not happy being in the cage that I put him in but he finally settled down. I'm not sure what I'll name him yet though. I have him in the rabbit shed with the other rabbits and they DO NOT like it. I don't know if it's a male or female because I WAS NOT checking to see. He would have tore me up alive !!!!! The other rabbits are stomping and running around their cages like crazy. They know that they have a new suite mate. My oldest girl nipped at me this morning when I went to put food in her feeder. That is a FIRST. I have had her for 6 years and she has NEVER showed any signs of aggression up until this morning. This is a rabbit that I let free range in the yard and will not go anywhere. So she is scared, nervous and confused. I hope that the other rabbits will settle down. :/

Well here is a pic of the captured criminal.

Congrats on your hatch!
I've had to help "shrink-wrapped" chicks out before - if I can get a hole chipped out for their heads & mist them & put them back in the bator they usually hatch the rest of the way on their own. I use tweezers & gently pick the 'shrink-wrapped membrane" apart so they can get their head out & breathe.

Honestly? if I have a lot of chicks hatching, once the first batch has dried off & is fluffy, I have Jim quickly open the bator lid part of the way while I scoop out several of the dry ones & as many empty shells as I can grab to give the rest of them room. Sounds like your humidity is nuts in there but hopefully will get high enough for some of the rest to hatch.

Jeff has good advice on the egg cartons - I've done that also, esp. when I have a big clutch of eggs to hatch.

I just bet that was a sight, you chasing that rabbit! Glad you caught the wascallly wascal!

i do the same - keep mine in the "medicine cabinet" -- just made a note I have to pick up some Safeguard for the next worming cycle,

I have a huge toolbox and a couple shelves in the fridge filled with all the meds and syringes I need. Also, I have several pages of medicine and dosing information on the fridge in the barn as well.
The few minutes or hours it can save can mean the difference between life and death for one of our birds.

I pulled out a toolbox cabinet that someone gave me a couple of years ago and will be putting the meds in there. My med cabinet has grown and I need more space. I use to have a few pages of information but I decided to get a little more detailed since I had a situation with one of my baby peas that was traumatic, so I am not taking a chance ever again.
