"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just purchased some "red pullets" from TSC last week to add to my flock for egg production. My sister in law bought some last year and have been great layers for her. My question is; does anyone know what kind of chicks these are?

Most likely Red sex links or Production Reds.  They make great layers.

Yep. I saw those and I have been wanting some since.

For those of you who remember me talking about the neighborhood rabbit (have no idea who it belongs to) that has been loose for about 6 months and surviving by eating the feed that are in my feeders,......... well his free ranging spree ended about 11:00 PM last night when I went "WABBIT" hunting. I ran him down for about 45 minutes. We were both so tired but I prevailed in the end. He was NOT a happy camper. He SQUEALED like a hog going to the butcher. I think he woke up the neighborhood. He was not happy being in the cage that I put him in but he finally settled down. I'm not sure what I'll name him yet though. I have him in the rabbit shed with the other rabbits and they DO NOT like it. They are stomping and running around their cages like crazy. They know that they have a new suite mate. My oldest girl nipped at me this morning when I went to put food in her feeder. That is a FIRST. I have had her for 6 years and she has NEVER showed any signs of aggression up until this morning. This is a rabbit that I let free range in the yard and will not go anywhere. So she is scared, nervous and confused. I hope that the other rabbits will settle down. :/ Well here is a pic of the captured criminal.
:thumbsup I just bet that was a sight, you chasing that rabbit! Glad you caught the wascallly wascal!
:yuckyuck :lau LOL @ wascallly wascal! :lau

Morning all!

Woke up to 8 little chicks and 0 water in the 'bator. None at all. So I worked quickly to get them out and added a wet paper towel and some water to the reservoir. The egg from yesterday (first pipped) is still not out and barely breathing. He made no progress last night.

2 more have hatched since then but I don't dare open it. There is also an egg that was SO CLOSE to hatching when I added the water, and it looks like I may have "shrink wrapped" him. The membrane is retracting to his body and getting darker.

Actually, looking again, I can't tell which egg that actually is. The 2 chicks are playing football and the other eggs are rolling around.

Those 2 eggs can both breathe, so I'll just leave them for now. Now onto pics:

^^^This was the one I nicknamed Gimpy. His couldn't stand for a while, but now I can't figure out which one is him.

John--like Jeff said, put the eggs in cut egg cartons for hatch to avoid the soccer games. Here is what mine look like in the incubator.

The one that looks shrink wrapped--pull him out and go to a sink. Get some lukewarm water dripping. Pick about a quarter inch of shell around the pip hole and then see how bloody the membrane looks--Are the veins all still red? If not, slowly wet the membrane careful not to get any in chick's nostrils. After it is damp, slowly pull it back. If it bleeds...stop. If no bleeding, you can slowly unpick the chick until he can move a little.

Remember that this can go either way. I usually do well getting them out if they're shrinkwrapped, but I did once lose one while I was trying to get him out.

Ok, should I put them in carton now? There are 7 pipped I think. And is now the time to assist? I'll have to leave within a few hours

actually would be better to rig up a divider (cardbord fence) of some sort to keep them separated you could measure it close on the OD and put it in quick enough. standing the eggs on end after they been lying sideways could be as disrupting to them as the rolling does them, too. just a suggestion when you do it try to put it to the side and bunch them up tighter so as they hatch there will be less moving around for the unhatched eggs

He hatched, but I had to intervene 3 times. 1st was initial, then I took off the "cap" since he wasn't doing anything. Last because he had pushed out and his stomach had dried onto the shell and he was dragging it around.

12 hatched. Officially over 50%

And another is about to get out. I can hear him peeping.
13 - another just hatched.

I dipped some of their beaks in water, but they don't seem interested yet. They sleep in the feeder though.

20 out of 22 eggs have pipped/zipped/hatched. Not bad
