I don't have them but did think about getting them at one time! I've read that you have to pen them up for a good long while but I believe they will still wander (I think)

Sorry I can't remember exactly what I read on it! I'm sleep deprived right now, think I was up every hour checking on babies!!

I was just reading some of the threads in the guinea fowl section and a lot of people keep them penned up until they are ADULTS. WOW !!! So, that is where I went wrong. That is a long time to have them penned up but I guess there's a reason for doing that.

How are the babies doing this morning. I bet you're tired girl.

Julie, I SWEAR you have ESP!!!! I was just coming on to post the exact same questions! Where are you getting your guineas from?

I just shot our 2nd snake of the year last night. I was going out to lock up the chickens for the night & Sparky - you remember our basenji-terrier dog? -- he was carrying on like crazy & I knew he had a snake cornered, so I went back inside & got the shotgun, Jim & a flashlight. (Jim can no longer shoot well because he has familial tremors).

We went back out & pulled out Sparky's bedding & looked around & poked around w/a stick -- nothing. But Sparky whined & scratched at his dog house so I told Jim "it's underneath his house. Flip it & get back". So he did & sure enough, a mud snake was coiled up in striking position but I had my .410 cocked & ready & blew his head off.

Sparky wouldn't sleep in his dog house last night. I brought him inside but he didn't want to stay inside either so I finally took his blanket & put it up on his "outside deck" (he won't eat or drink on the ground, only on his "deck" Yes, he's weird) & that's where he slept.

Soooooo, I'm looking for guineas or guinea eggs!

OK to answer your question, I've had them twice in the past & lost them both times. The first time, I raised them out in our horse barn but they were always very wild & one day just flew away -- all together. I never saw them again. The 2nd time, I spent more time with them & they were fairly friendly until they grew up - but they still stayed around, but roosted outside in that sycamore tree in Sparky's yard & the silly things one by one flew down into his yard instead of outside of it when they came down from the tree & he killed & ate them. I only had 3 of them that time.

This time, I'm going to keep them confined in my brooder & really work with them every day & if I see them even try to roost in that sycamore I'm going to fire some bottle rockets or something up there & scare them out of it.

WOW! they are sure pretty! Hmmm, very tempting! thanks for letting me know about it--

Hey your baby is TOO CUTE!!!! Congratulations!

I think I'm going to fire up my bator next week & set a test batch of Ameracauna eggs. I just can't stand all this cuteness!

I couple years ago, I had six lavendar guineas that I raised from babies. They were very pretty! I kept them confined until they were adults. Actually, I kept them confined with chickens that were raised together with them. Once they became adults, I had to separate them from my chickens though because they started bullying my chickens. When they were adults, I'd let them out ocassionally to forage and they did fine. They'd always return to their roost by early evening. If I remember correctly, they often returned to their roost before most of my chickens. They were easy to keep but were somewhat noisy.

Well, the end of the story was when my goldens broke out of their kennel, and then tore into the kennel of my RIRs and killed all of them, and then continued their rampage by tearing into the adjacent kennel containing my guineas and killed all of them.

I wish I still had them. I plan to get more lavendars, and also some whites. I've heard that the lighter colored guineas have lighter meat. Please forgive me, I love guinea and sausage gumbo and you have to do something with too many males!

YIKES!!!! I remember Sparky. He is such a handsome boy!!! And a smart boy as well. He knew something was wrong and he wouldn't stop until you all listened to him. Good thing that you did. I'm glad that Sparky is doing well. You should give him an extra treat for that.

Now after saying that, I can't believe Sparky killed and ate your guineas.

WHY SPARKY!!!!!!!!!! Bad dog Mr. Sparky.

The guy that I buy my guineas from lives in Eunice (about 20 minutes from my house). I can PM you his name and phone number. I talked to his wife early this morning as soon as I saw that he posted his signs around town. Once this signs go up, time is limited because everyone buys his guineas. His wife said that they will begin hatching in a month. He just put the eggs in the incubator this week. So, I told her I wanted 30 guinea keets and she has my order. He is an older man (about 70 years old). He has acres and acres and acres of land. He must have about 200 guineas. He has every color of guinea that you would ever want and imagine. He has a VERY nice set up. I have been to his place and it's neat, clean and well kept. So, I'm ok buying birds from him. I'm VERY picky and I don't buy animals from anyone and I don't buy animals often, but I do trust him. I know that I will have to get them tested when they become of age and that's ok. I REALLY want and need these guineas for bug control and as you stated (SNAKES). I don't have "A Sparky", so they will have to be my Sparky.

So, just let me know if you want his info. He sells them for $2.00 a piece (straight run). The first batch of colors to sell in a month will be white, grey and pearl.

I can't wait to get mine. And I agree with you on the guinea and sausage gumbo. That is exactly what I will be doing with the extra males. They will be GUMBO!!!!

I wish that I could get the lavendars but he only put in the whites, greys and pearl colored.

Oh well.

Julie please do PM me his name & number.

Now reading on the guinea thread they are saying that guineas killing snakes is just a myth. I never actually saw any of mine kill snakes so I don't know. I would think just their foraging around would make snakes want to go away somewhere else though. And like you said, they are excellent bug control. Watchdogs too -- you either love 'em or hate 'em with their noise.

Sparky considers anything that gets into his yard fair game except snakes -- the ONLY time he barks is when he has a snake in his yard & he's terrified of them. (Otherwise he only does the Basenji 'yodel'). I had an entire flock of young chickens get out once & with all that land around us, where did they go? Straight into Sparky's yard! he killed every single one of them.

He's killed several squirrels, chickens, guineas, birds, turtles, possums, rats -- he won't eat possum or rat or turtle but will eat squirrels & poultry.

I originally wanted him to be an inside dog but he is just too hyper & destructive, so he has his own setup outside. He does come in during bad weather.

My two outside barn cats, Kit-kat & Minou, both have killed snakes. Now if only they wouldn't gift us with them by leaving them on the back doorstep! dead rats & mice too.....I always look before I step out of my back door, lol.

edited to add: I've been googling this & found several accounts of people who own guineas who say they have seen their guineas kill - but not eat - snakes. In fact, almost any breed of fowl will kill snakes.

Hey-- peafowl will kill cobras!

Maybe that's why I haven't seen any snakes. I have about 9 feral cats that I feed. Maybe they are killing all of the snakes. I hope so.
