Now reading on the guinea thread they are saying that guineas killing snakes is just a myth. I never actually saw any of mine kill snakes so I don't know. I would think just their foraging around would make snakes want to go away somewhere else though. And like you said, they are excellent bug control. Watchdogs too -- you either love 'em or hate 'em with their noise.
Sparky considers anything that gets into his yard fair game except snakes -- the ONLY time he barks is when he has a snake in his yard & he's terrified of them. (Otherwise he only does the Basenji 'yodel'). I had an entire flock of young chickens get out once & with all that land around us, where did they go? Straight into Sparky's yard! he killed every single one of them.
He's killed several squirrels, chickens, guineas, birds, turtles, possums, rats -- he won't eat possum or rat or turtle but will eat squirrels & poultry.
I originally wanted him to be an inside dog but he is just too hyper & destructive, so he has his own setup outside. He does come in during bad weather.
My two outside barn cats, Kit-kat & Minou, both have killed snakes. Now if only they wouldn't gift us with them by leaving them on the back doorstep! dead rats & mice too.....I always look before I step out of my back door, lol.
edited to add: I've been googling this & found several accounts of people who own guineas who say they have seen their guineas kill - but not eat - snakes. In fact, almost any breed of fowl will kill snakes.
Hey-- peafowl will kill cobras!
