I surely wish that I could get some but my plans for the 2011 Spring hatching has gone all wrong. All of the single hatches, lone birds/ducks/geese took up all of my brooder space and I have no more room. I have broody girls that I need to move right now and I can't because babies have take up space. They are ok for now because they are in the chicken house but I have to move them ASAP. This is the craziest hatching year that I have EVER had.

I know exactly what you mean I have some first year half-breed Phoenix pullets and you talk about hot these girls have got it going on and all of them are going broody at once too. I have one hatched and 5 more asettin' and atleast 3 more trying to figure out what's up with their hormones as we speak, its crazy. On your turkey Tom- have you tried treating him for botulism(food poisoning) that can cause them to have the symptoms like wry neck and also a vitamin defficiency, cant remember right off which but I'm going to the library and look for it soon as I can't stand not remembering such and just as soon as I find the book I'm going on-line and ordering me one so I can have it around for such instances as this.

My brain storage capicity is all full of mechanic work right now as Ive been so busy this year fixing up cars and trucks because people can't afford new ones in this suck-@$$ (oops-

) economy we are dealing with now. I shall hush my mouth

Congrats on all of the broodies. Isn't it crazy with all of this?

I haven't treated him for botulism but now you got me thinking. If you find out more, just let me know. I"m all ears for any ideas anyone may have. I"m desparate for my boy. I'm subscribed to another thread and few other people on BYC give prednisone to their birds that have wry neck. I will mention this to the vet on Saturday.

I can barely sleep now that I know my boy will be seeing the vet on Saturday for his wry neck. I'm anxious at what the vet will tell me. I will definitely post the news on Saturday to let everyone know. It may help someone out in the future who experiences this. I hope it's good news.

VERY cool-ish out there indeed. I had to bring my Tom turkey in last night because he seems to get sick as soon as the temps drop. I have been working with him for about 4 weeks now and I can't afford for him to get another respiratory problem. His wry neck has not budged. This is the most stubborn case of wry neck that I have EVER seen. I have been able to cure him before in the past but this is getting frustrating. The thing is he is still eating, drinking, running around, strutting his stuff and having fun with his girls but his neck is still twisted. I will be taking him to the vet in Lake Charles on Saturday morning to let the vet look at him. I'll be leaving out at 6:00 AM to get there early enough so that I can be the first person in line. If they can't do anything, then I will be off to LSU School of Vet Medicine. I talked to LSU Monday and they said that Dr. Thomas Tully will take a look at him.

Julie, I hope your turkey is feeling a little better. I don't even know what wry neck is. I'll need to do some research on this when I have time. Keep us up to date with him.

Thank you. Here are pics (2009 & 2011 pics) of my turkey and his wry neck. Notice how twisted his neck is. He gets a respiratory problem every 16 months and this is what happens to him in addition to the respiratory problem. Many people on the turkey thread are having this same problem. I cured it the last time he had it but this time it is not going away. This is why I am taking him to the vet. Baby chicks and adult chickens can get wry neck as well. It looks bad but he is not in pain or suffering. He still eats, drinks, struts for his ladies, walks around, runs, can still fly up about 5 feet to roost, etc.

This is what he looks like without wry neck. He is so sweet and VERY tame.

ETA:
Forgot to add that he gets these respiratory problems when the weather is REALLY cold. This last cold spell (below freezing temps) that we had caused this round of respiratory problems. When the weather is too cold, I have to remove him from the flock and let him sleep in the garage where it is warm. When he gets this respiratory problem he is IMMEDIATELY removed from the rest of the flock so that he cannot pass this on. He is the only bird/animal that ever has this. No other bird in my flock has ever been sick.

If a person doesn't pay attention to their turkey or inject meds in their Turkey as soon as they get a respiratory problem, the turkey can be dead within 48 - 72 hours. It's a bad cold/sinus infection that they get and it is deadly. The owner has to be vigilent and dedicated to treating the bird. If not the bird WILL die.

Symptoms:
1. Cold like symptoms
2. Crust around the eyes and nostril area
3. Rattling of the chest inside when breathing
4. Loss of appetite
5. Roosting on low ground and not high above ground
6. Droopy wings
7. Ruffled feathers
8. Diarrhea (liquid poop)
9. Swollen Eyes
10.Bad breath (smells like someone who has a bad sinus infection)

Treatment:
1. Tylan 50 - 1 - 2 cc's each day (twice a day) for 3 weeks.
2. Enfamil Poly-Vi-sol Essential vitamins for infants and Toddlers (it's in a purple and gold box) in a syringe and squirt it in his mouth twice a day.
3. Vitamin E with Selenium soft gel tabs (4 tabs squeezed out into syringe)
4. Pedialyte or Gatorade - squirt it in his mouth twice a day. (The reason for the Pedialyte or Gatorade was to get the electrolytes in him for energy.)
5. Hand feed cooked eggs, mashed potatoes and grits twice a day.
6. Squirt water after each meal and as often as possible.

Julie, Thanks for the information. That's quite interesting! Your tom is quite handsome. I can see why you're attached to him. My Saddleback gander is a sweetheart and one of my favorite animals. I can't ever get a really good picture of him because he's always moving in too close to me. When we have our little visits/chats it's always face-to-face -- literally. I believe he thinks I'm one of his girls. I'll have to get pictures sometime. He's funny!
