Anyone know a local place (baton rouge area, although I'm not against a road trip)that sells identification bands? I can't see paying 10 dollars for shipping on something that cost 7 bucks

Hi, am from Lafayette area...so happy to find this thread...am first time chicken owner but I didn't own them long they just took over and I fell in love with the whole thing, now I do their bidding...Ha...am interested in increasing my flock....looking for the best breed for what was "Hard Times" in depression...a breed that is best suited for free range foraging (as feed may not be readily available ) with prices going up I want to get ahead of the game...egg laying important...will not necessarily be a heavy breed because they require a lot of feed ...got any ideas? what did your grand-parents raise... I really enjoy reading this link but had to stop and ask the question..KUNTRYGIRL.. have enjoyed all your input ..look for the beautiful turkey then saw you have a sick one...am sorry..what is your best breed for "tough times" I'd be interested to hear....thank you

I'm near Sulphur but was born and raised in Abbeville. Earned my Psychology degree from ULL. I go through Lafayette quite often to visit my children and grandchildren in Abbeville. I'm glad you found us! Chickens are so much fun!

Cabinet Incubator ordered today

And, refurbished my old incubator.

I think I'd better start building some mini-coops because I don't know what I'm going to do with all of those chicks once they hatch!

My grandparents always had Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, and some turkeys but I don't know the variety.

I am quite pleased with my Black Australorps for their continuous egg laying. I get eggs from them when most of my other hens have slowed or stopped laying. I used to keep White Leghorns because they were supposed to be good egg layers but, when my Australorps consistently gave me more eggs than the Leghorns, I decided to get rid of the Leghorns.

Our Lily had 4 Shih Tzu puppies today, had to make a temporary pen for the sire (out of our breakfast nook and 48" chicken wire

), candled my eggs and just don't know (humidity has jumped WAY up along with outdoor humidity and temps), and tearing a house down so that I can rebuild it on my land.
Anyone know how to go about getting a clone of ones self?

Tearing down house to rebuild -- Lots of work!!! Good luck with your project.

At least you'll have chickens to cheer you up at the end of the day.

YES! And I'm amazed with the way that they've tamed down. My two original EE's were so scared at first, and now they practically jump into my arms. My crazy rooster does a dance in the feed when I pour it out ...HILARIOUS!
