"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Great news guys! My first chick-to-chicken raised flock laid their first eggs today! I'm a very proud chicken momma.

Im amazed that they pretty much started laying at the same time. These babies are going in the incubator on Sunday. I should have about twenty to put in if everyone lays every day. Now, to figure out who lays the beautiful dark egg~ (And funny thing is, I have three hens in the pen. I must have missed yesterday's egg?)
Congrats on your eggs!

Those are beautiful!! When mine first started laying I put pine shavings in the nesting boxes bec I couldn't find hay bales. I had hay for a while now so today I thought I would switch out the pine for hay. Nice, right??? NO!! One of the girls needed to lay her egg and she ran from box to box picking out the hay. So I pulled out all the hay and put in pine shavings and she hopped in and laid her egg. Wow. I guess chickens don't like change. Lol

When it was raining today they all huddled under the new chicken shelter. I'm not quite done, but just have a few touches left, but the shingles are on and it was very dry under there so I put in a bunch of hay for them to nestle into.

Since the bottom of the bunny hutch is hardware cloth, I put a bunch of hay in the hutch and a thick hay nest in each of the little bunny houses so they can each go into a house, or even in one together, so I'm hoping they will be able to stay warm. (Also the hutch is wrapped on three sides with tarp). This is my first winter with the bunnies and I don't want them to suffer. My second winter with the chickens.

Any other suggestions on the bunnies would be great. The wind doesn't blow into the open end of the hutch.
I need to try pine shavings in the nesting box. I wasn't sure if the smell would be too strong for them. Mine HATE hay! They will pull out every single piece of hay from all 6 boxes! The funny thing is, everyone lays in the same box!
I don't know about bunnies, and hope to keep it that way for a while. My youngest wants a bunny for Christmas. I've put him off until our "next house". I'm hoping that he moves on to something else and I won't have to "pay up".

I need nothing else I have to care for separately. I can always use more chickens!

Obviously bad weather doesn't stop hungry raccoons from looking for a meal. I just lost 2 of my roosters - The "Picture of the Week" serama rooster Sal and my Japanese bantam boy Boss. From what I can gather the d*** thing opened two of the pens and the roosters sacrificed themselves so the girls could escape. They didn't stand a chance.

The girls are okay. They were scared but unharmed. I'm so freaking upset right now. Here Sal was, enjoying his spot in the limelight and some nasty vermin has to go and kill my boy. Guess I'm buying padlocks tomorrow. That coon is dead but I don't want its cousins taking anyone else from me.

I am SO SORRY!!

I am glad that you have such beautiful pictures to remember him by.

Its funny that this scratch & sniff/sample topic has come up.......because this morning when I was cutting a loaf of soap that I call "Lavender Abyss" I was telling the hubby (that was hovering, watching my fun) that I was thinking of cutting slivers off of the end pieces as samples to go into orders. We are working on a few things to make even more improvements.....mostly for my cutting ability (or lack there of). We are going to make a REALLY precise cutter for the big loaves. I love it when they are lined up and they are all super straight and all the same size.

It makes my OCD happy!!!

I would love to have a cutter made by Bud Haffner(he has a shop on etsy).......but those are pricey! I am sure between my hubby and I though we can do this!!! Hubby used to work for a really good carpenter in his younger years.
The bars I received were cut beautifully. I love the "sample" idea. My soap was beautiful, but I'm SO about the smell! When I pulled my Honeyed Ale soap out yesterday to make sure I got the name correct when I posted it, I left it sitting by the computer and I SO enjoyed the smell all day. I think I'm going to let it sit here a while. It was so relaxing.
