"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

They're about the size of cherries -- they come in red & yellow varieties. My cousin has the red ones. We have them pop up all over, like weeds. They also have long thorns on them, so we cut ours down except for a few I left in the chicken yards for shade - but they don't make plums for some reason.

lol @ breaking your first egg in your robe! it won't be the last!

That's why I said first.

Why can't we all be neighbors and share our gardens?? That would be wonderful. I have lots of corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew, and figs! My blueberry bushes didn't produce this year. :( My satsumas are cute little babies right now.

We've talked about this before. That we need our own town. I have figs too this year I'm going to can and dehydrate them. Those melons sound delishious . Your chickens will love the scraps. Pam

We sure do!

I am planning to dehydrate figs this year so I can use them later on in breads and homemade fig newtons.

I wish we could grow melons here but our soil's wrong for them.

The satsuma tree is looking good and the meyer lemon tree, which lost ALL of its' leaves during the freezes, grew leaves back and now is blooming & starting to set tiny lemons, so I'm hopeful!

Have you dehydrated them before? I have a dehydrator I tried doing it last year which was my first try. They turned into fig rocks.lol. I need to find a happy medium. If you have done it successfully how long did it take?

I have nothing!!!    I have 3 fig trees 2 ft tall in pots.   Need to get set out.   I wonder how long the fig has to grow before setting fruitl.

I'm not sure how old but once I put it in the ground the next season I had figs. Mine are in full sun . This year ill get a few gallons. You just need to pick them before the birds and opossum 's get them. The chickens can't get to my tree but they love them too. I give the ones other aminals have taken a bite out of.
My favorite sweet is dried figs stuffed with almond butter then dipped in dark chocolate. :drools

I made the exact same mistake the first time I tried it! "fig rocks" - yep! I made "tomato rocks" too!

I'm at work right now; I'll have to look up my notes. My figs are the Kadotas - the big white ones & they are very watery.

Our tree is so old I forget how long it took it to start bearing, so no help there.

That's so funny "fig rocks" :lau I could use the guidance. Lol. Mine are the everyday turnkey type. I would like other viraites but I need to get a hand on preserving and drying the one I have first. Ours is 20 years old and we have to get a latter to pick the top ones.

I got my fig tree from Lowes. The first year it sat in the garden in the plastic pot. The second year I planted it and it's healthy and strong and growing but there is no hint of figs yet. I also have a wild plum that a BYC member brought me. It's healthy and strong and growing too, but it's far from bearing. With patience and time.
