"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

My poor rooster. He had a bit of foam in his eye this evening, which I read was a respiratory symptom. This fowl pox is just working it's way through the flock; several hens are getting the white patches.

When everyone gets cleared up we're going to take four to auction, two sussex and two RIW. That will put us back to 11, which is really a nice number for me. 15 has such a nice ring to it, though, so I'm trying to stall as long as possible. ;)

I wish I could say I'm looking forward to this weekend

but I know its not going to be fun. So I will look forward to Sunday/Monday.

Hanging with chickens and kids and looking at pictures is always good though. Here are a few random ones we got this week.

So, anyone know what this larvae is??? It has a funny story. My daughter occasionally whittles. She had this straight branch in the corner of her room with a few others in her "stash". We heard a TAPPING and I found that it was coming from this branch. We cut it open and found this! My daughter is thoroughly creeped out!!!

But the other daughter is collecting insects for next years 4-H project and wants to keep it and see what it becomes. Double

A couple of the insects that my youngest dried in the proper shape. I think she is doing a decent job for an amateur.

I think she will be a wonderful broody when she grows up. Not to mention that she is cute as a button. We let her run around mostly. The bigger bantams pick on her (mildly). So at night she gets up here in the rafters. Then we get her and put her up safely for the night. Feathered legs, ear muffs and a little beard. So cute.

One of the baby Serama. This one already stands up so cute! We already think its a boy......named Squirrel. Isn't there someone else here on the Louisiana page that got Serama (eggs) from member BHep???

I tried to crochet myself a hat for this winter. It came out super great. Tried it on but hated it.

Thought I might just take it apart, but my oldest LOVES it!!! She has worn it for the last 2 days straight. So now I get to try a new pattern without feeling like I wasted all that work. In the picture its only partially done.

Hope everyone enjoys this nice weather!

About 4 years ago we had a little bout of dry pox go through our flock. I'm glad it didn't get bad. But they all recovered nicely without any lasting negative effects. Hope yours come through okay too.

I change as needed or no later than every three or four weeks, depends if they are soiled, dusty, or appear too packed down.

I guess every week. On Fridays I clean the poop sling and clean out the floor of the coop and best boxes. But, I never really thought about it. It's mainly because I have to cleAn the poop sling every week or it gets pretty nasty and while I'm at it I do the other.

What a great post, Lemon. How fun. I didn't know you had Seramas. I love them. Nice news of your children. Are you still making soap?

I absolutely love his coloring and pattern.  SO cool.  One of my daughters little Red Cochin roos has barring on his saddle area.  Not super defined.  But I do know he has some barred in his back round.  So it will be interesting when we are breeding to see if any of the others show up with it.

I love their color too. The hens aren't as colorful but are very pretty. They are Ron's favorite now. They are gentel giants and are the most docile of all the breeds we have. Only one drawback the hens take longer than most to mature. They take 7 tp 8 months to lay but the payoff is the eggs are among the biggest of large chickens. They are getting close to laying I noticed today their combs are turning red.

I think that is what happened here. I switched back to purena hopeing I don't have any more cases. My Lipitor splash Orpington moves around a lot but has to lay on a solid surface he can't perch. It's not getting any worse it's just hard to tell if there is any improvement. Appreciate the clarification on feed having been your problem, I seriously believe it's what caused mine too.

Also from this morning, one of the alleged RIW. This is the one with the misshapen beak. One has an unusual eye (pupil never dilates) and one has a darkish beak. These are their identifying marks.

I saw this on Dunlap Poultry, Amber White Chickens, made me think about your hens and everyone trying to identify them... The comb is not right, but the coloring seems to be very close! Thought it might give you an avenue to look at!

The Amber White is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White. They are a calm, easily adaptable bird with excellent livability. The Ambers beautiful brown egg color and good feathering throughout the lay makes her a preferred product
