Lakones. I'm not answering for Pam but I would think at 5 weeks they should be close to being feathered out enough to handle 30 degrees especially that they're in a coop under a roof if that's the situation you have. If anything you could just give them a heat lamp for the cooler night temps.



Do any of ya'll weigh your birds? If yes what type scales do you use?

Tks Cody. The question wasn't specifically for Pam , I was asking her to verify the age since they came from her. They are feathering well and are a nice size so I think they'll be ok, I was just looking for reassurance more than anything. They are in a coop in the Morgan building that I converted. It was very windy here last night so I went out to make sure they were not in a draft and all seemed well.

I use a postage scale. It measures to a hundredth of an ounce, will do grams too, and maxes out around 35 lbs. I think it was $25-30 on amazon. I've used it for eggs, chicks, and full grown birds.

Im glad all went well las night! I didnt want to chip in without backup, but all of mine are outside and weaned off of the light. When we had those cold snaps last month, i had some at 6-7 wks outside without light and theyre also still thriving.

How do you get them to stand still. I have some electronic scales that I think are postal scales and would work. But would maybe need a basket or something to put them in while weighing. I've read you can shield their eyes or blind fold to weigh so they don't move around.

I just hold them around the wings, then slowly let go until they're standing on their own. They behave a little better if I bring them inside to do it; seems like they fuss more if they can see their friends.

But you could put them in a cat carrier and do it that way pretty easily. My birds are all pretty tame and have been handled a good bit.

Thanks!! Howr all babies!?! I had give em that sulfadimethoxine that Lemon recomended: it was 6$ vs 24$(?something like that) found it on the back wall jus like you said its been four days now im so flipn happy it really is over

And on the quails note! I hafta tell u guys it was so funny! I confronted the lady who sold me the poopy eggs at the Denham swap yesterday she recognized me an askd how she knew me? I told her "i bought 90 poopy eggs from u last week, half were cracked, theres only 45 alive." She askd me How That couldve happened... So i proceeded to explain how the poop permiated the bloom and poisioned the eggs. Then how the shells are very brittle proving inadequet nutrision... She just Sat Down. I wasnt like "make a Scene" type of mean, i didnt curse her out despite what she deserves, but my words were very pointed. She knew i was right, and i couldve gotten my $ back, but that wasnt my perogitive. I realize that i screwed up in how i didnt look at them on the spot and i accept that.

She should have offered to replace or refund. That would've been the right thing to do. Everyone makes mistakes it's how you handle them that shows who you are. She must have known and hoped you weren't educated enough to figure it out. Glad you confronted her. Pam

I see we have a few cold nights ahead. Per the weather channel, Thursday thru Saturday nights will be n the 30s. I have a question about the Breese chicks, they will be 5 weeks old this week (Pam, correct me if I'm wrong) and are living in a coupe inside the chicken house. Do I need to bring them in for these 3 nights?

Yesterday I tried to see if momma broody would take them with her other 2, but so far not. She wasn't mean to them, just not interested.

Five weeks they should be fine sometimes I give the little ones a heat light to be safe. Pam

Thanks for giving the chick advice. The Barbs are starting to lay. You can by little glasses for them that block there sight and lenses that keep them from seeing red. I'd love to see the video of you trying to weigh a Bard. Lol! Pam
