I made some really nice fairly cheap brooders.I used 2 1x12's for the sides(cut each into a 3' and a 5' piece)I used 1/2 X 1 welded wire,but hardware cloth works good too.(I have one with it.) and hardware cloth across the top with a couple hole cut in the top for doors.My light can just set on top or clamp on.I added a support across the top and some 1x2 liners along the top and bottom outside to hold wire in place AND prevent cuts.They have worked very well for me.For extra warmth I just put feed bags over the top to hold the heat in and they get air from the bottom.

I definetly use hardware cloth for my brooders. My big brooder I made was made out of recycled wood and the only thing that was new was the hardware cloth, hinges & latches! Cost about $35.

Well myluck is really bad today just lost 3 more quail because some how the dang cage door got open and my little mutt was chasingbthem all over the yard

the my big dog jumped the fence and killed one and cant find the other two

and then check the humidity in my incubator and it was 32 !!!!! Ugh this is not my weekend for animals !!!!

so very mad !!!!

I have to say, since Jim made our homemade "night eyes" we have had NO signs of any predators around the coop or run. He used a piece of PVC pipe & put six red "eyes" around it & I don't know what all to wire it with- it runs off of two AA batteries. I flip the switch on it when I shut them up at night & it blinks rapidly & you can see it from a long way off.

I used to hear the roo sound an alarm call in the wee hours before sunrise but not anymore. No tracks, no signs of anything digging or pushing on the wire or anything, no noises from the peas either, who are right next door. So apparently, it works. I saw an ad for one that runs off a solar cell so that will be Jim's next project so we don't have to use battery power.
