"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Speaking of incubating... I'm down to one egg in my 'bator, and if it actually hatches it's going to be one sad chick. Does anyone know if there's a place I can get day old chicks locally? I'd really prefer a bantam variety or a silkie, since I was trying to hatch Sebrights, but beggars can't be choosers. Do any of the local feed stores (I'm in Lafayette Parish) still sell chicks this time of year?

Ooh, grats on the ovascope. I sure coulda used one- almost had a bad egg go POP in the incubator but luckily it started to emit the foulest smell so I got it out in time.

During everyone of my hatches every time I candled I smelled each egg to make sure none were going bad!!

Yeah, this was my first time and I was so scared to accidentally throw out a good egg that I waited till it REEKED to toss it. Probably not my best idea.

But it seems like only one of 5 survived shipping, and I have yet to see if it really made it or if it died during development. It's air cell looks right and it's dark looking with veins so fingers crossed!

When I dumped the 3 clears the yolks had all separated so they must have gotten kicked around quite a bit in the UPS truck.

Most people don't ship eggs through UPS!! I actually had great luck with shipped eggs this past Spring!! Having a good incubator makes a world of difference also!!

Ack, sorry, USPS!

Yeah, I went the home-made route and I think this may also have been part of the problem, but the yolks came out looking awfully scrambled with no discernable development, so I'm not really sure who to blame, lol.

Nice new toy!

As soon as I get another job, I'm using my first paycheck on a Brinsea Octagon bator.
Then I'm going to spend my next paycheck on SLW eggs -- thanks for the link Mike! those have some real pretty lacing & look like good quality stock.

Another pretty fall-ish day here, I'm off to a Wally-world run while the dew dries then home to cut the front forty. Silly hens; I let them out this morning & then walked out to get the paper -- every single one of them followed me down the driveway! I felt like the Pied Piper or something-- had to go get a bucket of feed & entice them back - don't want them on the highway!

Julie my peas were calling like crazy yesterday evening - I had the windows & doors open & a train went by & every time it honked, they honked back -- it was so funny!

Have a good one everybody!

I've had shipped eggs & every one of them had scrambled, broken yolks & zero hatch, & then re-shipped from same breeder & had a great hatch, so I think it was USPS playing soccer w/your package.

Yeah that's what my mom says about me when she sees me and my entourage heading back to the coop every evening for bedtime snacks

Morning everyone.... Hope everything is going good. Pretty good here for the most part. Had to work the shop for the last couple days,so today will be cleanup day for me I guess. Lee left quite a mess. Waiting till this weekend and let the teenagers do the dirt work for the pens that need it.Think I'm gonna start building Steve's new stall so I can move him into the side paddock quickly.I been letting the grass grow untamed over there,so he'll have enough for a couple days...lol...

Speaking of Pied Piper.... That's what I feel like everytime I walk out back...lol....They crowd on me so bad I have to boot them outta the way...and they are always trying to jump in the bucket while I'm walking. It's funny when the bucket is empty, cause it just flips to the side...lol....and they look around like huh?....
