"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just wanted to pass this along. Their are a couple new APA Poultry clubs that have recently started here in Louisiana. I am a member of the newly founded Southern Louisiana Poultry Breeders Association (SLPBA) http://www.holdenrabbitranch.com/southernlouisianapoultrybreedersassociation/ .
Their is also the Central Louisiana Poultry Club http://clpoultryclub.wix.com/mainpage#!map/c12iy.

Our goal for the SLPBA is to give members of the poultry community in Southern Louisiana the ability to exhibit their poultry and fowl in local APA sanctioned shows. We plan to have 2 APA sanctioned shows per year as well as several smaller club shows.

Membership is: 20/year for individuals
12/yr for junior members
35/yr or family memberships

Contact Carrie at [email protected] for more information or an enrollment form.

Here is a link to our Facebook page for anyone interested. http://www.facebook.com/SouthernLouisianaPoultryBreedersAssociation?ref=ts&fref=ts

As my flock keeps growing, I'm now questioning whether I should work on NPIP certification in the new year. What is that going to cost me? Is it worth it? I have to have it to any birds, correct? I appreciate the input. I'm new at all this and really would like to get my current breeds to be hatching a good standard of chick. And I thought I was just buying chickens to have a few eggs...HA! OCD, OCD, OCD...

It is free, I thinks it is deffinitley worth it. Last March was my first time. A guy from the state came over, as I caught each bird except the chicks (hard to find a vane on chicks) and turned it up side down he plucked three or four feathers under the first wing joint and drew a little blood from the visible vane. Mixed it on a little plastic like microscope slide with a special solution and you know the results right away for each bird.

Here is a little more 4-1-1 on NPIP .. I think the last phone number is the one to call if I remember right..

Free? I thought I read on the website it was 85 an hour plus the cost of bloodwork. Good to know. I can get started on that soon.

Call or email Dr. Barrington and he will get your local area state vet to call you and set up a test date. Yes, as others have said, it is completely free.

Thank you all so much for the info! I appreciate it. I've had a hard time finding anyone to answer my questions about the chicken world. I still have some birds I can't seem to identify the sex of and/or I'm not sure if they're going to be good enough standards for showing and don't seem to get any responses from my posts. Good to know there's some friendly folks around. Thanks again!
