i havent been on for a while now things have been crazy since my new grandbaby got here but its a great kinda crazy

, so i had alot of catching up to do

my girls have finally started laying decent and i now have 3 baches of eggs in the bator at 96 eggs per batch with the first ones hatching on wednesday

, and the bass are really starting to bite good, needless to say i love this time of year

yay you! WOW that's a bunch of eggs! -- what all do you have hatching?
Way to go on the bass -- this IS a good time of the year!

I just candled my eggs. I saw movement in 3 but the EE are hard to tell. All I could see is a dark shadow. Any ideas. This is day 8

No ideas here. I suck at candling in spite of the many I have hatched. I gave up several hatches ago -- I just lift the lid on my bator every day & give a quick "sniff test" - if I don't get a whiff of anything going bad (believe me, if there's an egg going bad, you will definitely know it) I let them alone. If I get a "bad whiff" I lift every egg until I find the culprit & very carefully lift it out of the bator & dispose of it (that's only happened twice in all the times I've hatched).

On day 8 if you see a shadow that's good. If you see clear, bad. Either way like Terri said let it ride if it doesn't smell. The blue & dark chocolate eggs are always the hardest to candle. I find it easiest shining the light down from the top of the egg. Next time you check I hope you see movement. Good luck!

Three questions: What did you mean by "now begins the drama?" How do the older geese turn the sheep into devils? What is a BAD BAD BAD goose?

I was actually googling about small size sheep. There is one that is pretty small, but it has the wool, so that's another story. What is "hair" sheep?

Sorry for so many questions, but I am just so curious.

Primrose, you evidently haven't been around geese very much.

I LOVE my geese, but, like Julie says, the geese can sometimes be BAD BAD BAD -- well, that language is a bit strong but to help you put it into perspective -- relate it to babies (human). They are so precious when they are little, and then you get into the terrible twos and we THINK it's tough but we get through it, then they're very enjoyable through the elementary years because they are so innocent and come up with the funniest little sayings. They're always making us laugh much due to their innocence. Time goes by and you're having fun and don't notice anything different until one day the DRAMA begins. It's the beginning of Adolescence. You look at this child and think, "who is this person?" Believe me, you definitely KNOW when adolescence begins. Teenages are so full of ATTITUDE! Like teenagers, geese are also FULL of ATTITUDE and they are quite content to let you know what they think. And, if you don't believe them, they will put a hurt on you to prove it. You can ask my husband. One of my geese pinched him and put a bruise on his leg the size of a softball. Believe me, my husband paid attention to that gander after that.

While teenagers get through adolescence and hopefully become reasonable adults, geese on the other hand, live out their adult lives with adolescent attitude. I hope this explanation helps

Morning all! I was kind of sad last night after candling eggs. I currently have Silver Penciled Rocks, Silkies, Showgirls, Blue Wheatens, BBS Marans, Blue Barred Rocks, Olive Eggers, Buff Faverolles, Arkansas Blues, Sicilian Buttercup, and BLR wyandottes in the incubators. There are way too many of these eggs that are doing NOTHING!

None of the blue rocks are doing anything and less than half of the blr wyandottes, arkansas blues, and wheatens are growing. Others are all okay. I've never had to pull out this many eggs for not developing! Bummed...

My new lavender orpington roo was supposed to arrive this morning. I was at the PO early. Lady says to me, "I'm sure he's dead. This whole room stinks now and it hasn't made any movement." My heart sank. I asked for scissors and, like a brave girl, I opened the box. That roo stood up and gave me the chicken eyeball! He was so happy to be freed! I brought him home, put him in a quarantine pen DH and I put together last night in 3 hours out of an old clothes dryer--kid you not, I am a Southerner and will always find a way to make something out of nothing! That rooster talked for over 15 minutes once I put him in his pen. Happy boy. Smells terribly after wallowing in poop in that box, but he's a happy boy!

Today is "Date Day" for DH and I. I think we're going out for italian food. I have no idea what else he has planned. Have a good day all!

Shipped eggs are so hit and miss. They could have been routed through somewhere really cold, or maybe they were just handled roughly in transit. I hope the ones that are developing all hatch for you! Congrats on your new roo making it safely! You should post pics once he's settled in. Date Day sounds awesome! We send the boys to grammie's every now and then for one of those. Hope you have fun!
