"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com/p/fermented-feed.html?m=1

I based mine off info in the link above...

I did grind up some seeds and added some flax to it as well...but you don't have too. Then it was just add feed...covered with 5-6" water and 1/4 cup unpasturized ACV with mother. Stir, cover with towel...wait 24-48 hours to serve/feed. You do need to stir it twice daily for the duration to keep it going. Then you just add more feed & water as needed.

What type of feed did you add? What seeds did you grind up? I think I would need A LOT of feed for all of my animals.

Sounds easy. I may try it this weekend.

Just what I need. More work. :/

I used starter/grower because all my birds are young. But you can use any feed, layer, etc...

I added ground up pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and some scratch.

Warm weather actually helps it ferment...in colder climates they often have to ferment indoors where it is warmer...atleast that is what I have read.

If it's better for the birds...saves on the feed bill...then it's a win! win! IMO

Hey y'all. I thought I'd just say "hey" :). I'm from Louisiana and I've been lurking a bit. Just thought I'd say a quick hello and try to get to know some of my neighbors here.

I'm fairly new to raising poultry. I have inspected plenty of them, though, and worked the kill floor! I was a meat inspector for 10 years before going back to school. I am really info hungry right now!! :)

We currently just have ducks (as far as poultry goes - but have horses, donkey, dog, house cat, too). I have grown very attached to the ducks and ducklings! I am wanting to get some geese and chickens now, too. However, much to my husbands dismay! LOL. But I always win out! :) He can't help he's a "city boy".

Anyway, hello to everyone!
Welcome your just down the road from me :)

Terri I will be coming to the Jennings show. Can you make it there or someone close to you coming I can bring you some AM chicks with me :)

Julie are you going ?

Gracie need me to bring you anything else lol

It is clear to me that if we are discussing purchasing any kind or size of cement mixer to mix chicken feed in---we are definitely serious addicts. I'm obviously in the right place.

How do you grind up your seeds? Stupid question........ I have heard that it saves on the feed bill but HOW does it save on the feed bill. What does it do to your chickens?

I'll have to take some new pics for you this week. Definitely don't think I need anything else at this point though! Gotta get a few chicks grown and out of the brooders before I start adding more! Plus, I just ordered some silkie eggs from Mary Robbins. I have hatched some really nice stuff from her before, so I'm hoping the eggs made it through shipping ok. I should be able to candle them tonight and tell.

Preliminary results on the duck egg experiment:

Eggs straight from nest: 67% development
Eggs that were washed but kept at room temperature: 67% development
Eggs that were refrigerated: 33% development

I will post hatch results in about a month! Eggs were given to me by a friend. I need to ask her how old they were, and if she turned them.

The 20th Julie and I have some Showgirls packed and ready but am bringing you some of those giant frizzled naked neck turkens too
