Cute babies!!

It was HOT HOT HOT this weekend. I will start freezing gallons of water and placing in the chicken house, stalls and under the raised coops. I am so afraid for my animals. It was too hot for ME to be out, so I know they are catching it. I have placed the pools in the shade. Between the skeeters and heat, I don't know what I'm going to do. :/

I'm doing frozen jugs in the nest area for laying- they love it. I hose down the coop, wrapped the run in a cloth for shade that I hose down in the heat to help...I'm scared for the birds too! Especially come August :/

I'm starting to have panic attacks. When it comes to the animals, I get VERY nervous. Since school is out, I will have the next door neighbor's kid come over and change out the waterers and pools twice a day while I am at work so they can have cool water all day long. I don't know how long the jugs last before they totally thaw out. Anyone have any idea? I have to check on that. I may have to find an extra chest freezer and put under the garage and fill it with frozen jugs and have her put out new frozen jugs come afternoon. I know if it's too hot for me, they are miserable. :(

We had a delicious rabbit stew (from the yard) and deer sausage this weekend. I also made the 10 egg pound cake. :drool

Also processed a young turkey hen. About 6 weeks ago, she did something to her ankle. Not sure if she broke it or not but i placed her in a pen by herself to heal. The broken ankle healed but then her hock was swollen because she was putting so much weight on it causing her foot to turn the opposite direction. Because she was penned up, her growth was not as the others her age was. She was smaller than the others because she was not able to roam around and free range. I felt sorry for the little girl. So, I made the decision to put her down. :( Relatives were over this weekend and they did it for me because they know that I can't. After processing her, I weighed her and she was only 7 lbs. So, she was a very small turkey hen but will be enough for a nice meal.

The next time my relatives are over, they will process a few more Toms for me. I have about 6 that need to go to the freezer. I will also be downsizing the guinea flock, so I am thinking about processing maybe about 10 of them. They will be guinea gumbo. With the 50 new chicks growing, I have to make room for the new babies. So, it looks like I will be filling up the freezer.

Hiding inside from the heat for a few more minutes. I a looking forward to the forecasted rain in the next few days.

Yesterday my hubs and I got the new back doors built into the back of the old hen house. Its great. Better air flow and a much wider opening so I can keep things cleaner. Much easier on my back too because I won't have to bend as much. We are going to do the same thing to the front of the house. I will be great to have all these modifications and updates done and then I can give the old house a new coat of paint too. The tricky thing we are going to have to do is somehow jack up the house and move it a bit and put concrete pads under the corners. Its a solid 6x6 house.......so not a lightweight. Fun, fun!!!

Anyone have any tips for getting rid of flies? Besides tapes or those bags you put water and attractant in?

The DE works pretty good.

Kinda quiet today. Did everyone survive the heat?
I spent the entire day working on payroll -- my 2nd time to do it -- getting better but SLOW!! I'll be glad when it gets to be second nature & I don't have to think so hard, lol!
Chickens are out roaming around -- seeking the shade-- started putting out frozen bottles here, too. Jim switches out at noon for me.
Gonna be a llll--ooo---nnn----gggg HOT summer!

I always hate doing payroll at a new place. Makes me soooo nervous. That's something you don't want to mess up. Lol
